Nebelung Breed Standard/Physical Description

Here are some facts on the Nebelung breed based on information in Wikipedia, March 2006 and the International Cat Association's Breed Standard.
  • Head: wedge-shaped
  • Ears: large and pointed
  • Eyes: medium-sized and slightly oval-shaped
  • Body: long
  • Legs: long
  • Paws: medium-sized and oval-shaped
  • Tail: roughly as long as the body and plume-like
  • Coat: blue, shiny, medium-long

The Nebelung cat breed is one of the new breeds of cat developed in the US in the 1980s. The first breeder of Nebelungs was Cora Cobb. She started the breed with Elsa, a black domestic shorthair cat, and a blue domestic shorthair whose name we do not have. Siegfried, a kitten with "blue" medium-long hairs was born to the first litter and Brunhilde, another "blue" medium-longhair kitten was born into the subsequent litter. Siegfried and Brunhilde were bred together, and their offspring were bred with Russian Blue cats.

The result was the Nebelung cat breed, which strongly resembles a longhair Russian Blue. However, Nebelungs will give birth to both long and shorthair kittens in a litter. The International Cat Association recognized the breed in 1987, though few other cat breeder groups have done so. The name, Nebelung, comes from a German word meaning "creature of the mist."
