Wonderful Invention November 4, 2008 Must appreciate the brain behind the product. It is well designed and it eases my timings allowing me to complete my work without having to worry about Rover and Timmy. I have had them (2 feeders) for the past 8 months and am happy with its performance. The capacity of the jar is good which allows me to take a break during week ends comfortably. Great product and I would recommend this to my friends.
Reliable and easy, but not sturdy enough October 7, 2008 In many ways, this product saved my sanity. My cat, who was abandoned, was absolutely obsessed with food when he came to live with me - he wanted it early, often, and was angry when he didn't receive it. He rapidly went from underweight to overweight, and we were both miserable. Enter the autopetfeeder - he is now a stable weight and a loving cat. It reliably dispenses a very precise amount of food. (I've read the reviews and wonder if some of the owners who have trouble with the amount are feeding their pets food that isn't the right size for this machine.) br /br /If your cat is smart, as is mine, he will eventually figure out how to stick his paw in and draw out a few pieces of food. Rest assured, this doesn't cause overeating; they can only access the few pieces at the bottom of the auger. So let them. They can also wiggle the machine to shake those pieces out - I solved that by affixing mine to the floor. br /br /My only complaint is that the nozzle that covers the opening is an unreliable plastic. Granted, it had a 12-pound cat pawing at it; but mine broke completely within 10 months. The plastic funnel - it's been redesigned since the picture on this site-- broke completely from left to right. Since I was past the 6 month mark, the seller did not have any obligation to fix the product (although under warranty) - nor did they even have the courtesy of responding to my email. Amazon responded, but did nothing to resolve the issue. Luckily, the manufacturer was more responsive. br /br /All things considered, I think this product has some design flaws - shouldn't it be built to withstand a curious cat? - but I would buy it again for the security it's given me over the past year.
Disappointed June 19, 2008 I tried to return the item and Ergo customer service made it so difficult that I just ate the loss and kept the item.
Great Product May 13, 2008 I was forced into an automatic pet feeder by one of my two cats who decided that being fed at 5 am was not early enough. The worst part was that even when he finally would get me up at 4:15 he wasn't hungry he just wanted me up.br /br /You do need to take a few minutes to read the instructions that come with this product. I found it easy to set up, though I did have to then create some protection to stop the other cat from finding ways to get extra food. However that was not the purpose of this product.br /br /I've been using this for about 8 months now. It is consistent, reliable, and accurate. It's been great!br /br /
Great product February 20, 2008 We've had this for about two weeks, and it works great. The unit holds a ten-pound bag of dry food, which will last anywhere from a couple weeks to a month depending upon how many pets you are feeding with it-- much longer than the typical 2-6 meal automatic feeders which just aren't sufficient if you plan to be away for more than a week. br /br /Although this feeder costs a little more than the rest, it is worth it. The build quality was much better than expected, and the feeder comes with a long 8-10' jacketed A/C power cord, which should discourage your pets from chewing on the power cord. br /br /The unit uses an electrically-driven horizontal auger to dispense food. A timer controls when-- and how long, the motor is on. The auger doesn't turn very fast; for our two cats it has to run 45-60 seconds to dispense the correct amount of food for each meal. The auger motor is fairly quiet, though you can hear food fall into the bowl if you are nearby. The timer is a bit bulky (about 4" square), and plugs directly into a wall outlet. The timer has two outlets on it- one that is timed (for the pet food bowl), and a spare outlet that is always on. The plug for the feeder fits tightly into the timer's outlet. At first I didn't think I liked the timer being a separate unit instead of built into the feeder, but now that I've thought about it, I think it was a great idea, because you can program the timer while sitting at the kitchen table. Also, the power cord only has power in it when the pet food bowl is actually dispensing food, so there is much less chance that your pet will chew through the cord and shock himself. Plus, with the timer located away from the feeder, your pet is less likely to paw at the timer and accidentally press a button. br /br /You can program up to eight "on" and eight "off" events, which can be set to daily, specific days, alternating days, etc. You will need to be careful when programming it though, to make sure that your "off" times are just a few seconds or a minute or so past the "on" time. Otherwise you could accidentally have the timer set to dispense food for several hours straight. You set timer events in weekdays, hours, minutes, and seconds, for both the "on" time and the "off" time for each event. A better solution would have been to set the "on" time, and then set the duration time (in minutes / seconds), but this is no big deal. You will probably have to experiment with the cycle times a bit to get them set so that you are feeding your pet the right amounts each day. For our two cats, we have our timer set to feed about every 4.5 hours, four times per day, for about 45 seconds each time, starting at 6:00AM and ending about 9:00PM. The timer has an internal battery, so I assume it would recover after a power outage, but I haven't tested this. There is a button on the timer that will cycle the unit between "on" (feed), "off", and "auto on" (timer) and "auto off" (??). You can press this button to initiate a manual feed for a few seconds if needed. You need to be careful when pressing it, though, because when you stop the manual feed, you should press it a couple times until the display shows "auto on", or else the timer will not automatically start the feeder. Other than the couple of quirks I mentioned, it's a great automatic pet feeder. br /
