Founding member Ake Skeppner sold products at windsurf competitions on the New England shoreline, exhibited the product line at a number of different trade shows, and even canvassed local retailers in the greater New York area, all from his "office"--a now-famous station wagon. Initial success was found in the small but growing sport of windsurfing where a strong, reliable roof rack was an indispensable piece of equipment. This was quickly followed by success in the ski business where Thule's Swedish heritage certainly helped the product gain rapid acceptance.p By the mid-1980s, the company sold products directly to ski and windsurfing shops but sold through distributors to address the large and growing bike business. A risky decision was made to terminate these distributor relationships and sell direct to retailers through a network of independent sales representatives. Much of the company's market success today can be traced to that decision. Shortly after, Ake hired an engineer and set up a small assembly plant in Elmsford, New York in order to design and manufacture bike carriers that would offer the features demanded by the U.S. consumer and compete effectively with other racks on the market.p The company has since grown rapidly through product innovation, a commitment to quality, and the continuance of a strong entrepreneurial spirit as well as continuing to evolve their products to meet the needs of users.p

Disappointing - failed in 200 miles June 20, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had seen some negative reviews on the soft type cargo carrier but figured with a name like Thule it was worth buying. First time used, a wooden child safety barrier gate (with no sharp edges, and no stretching of the bag to accomodate it) had worn a 6 inch hole thru the rear of the bag in less than 200 miles travel. The only other things being carried were a couple of foam "boogie boards" and several beach toys and floats.br /I wouldn't use this bag for anything more than soft clothing - the material is not as robust as winter jacket shell cloth - and nothing like the ballistic nylon that suitcases are made of. br /br /Update: Thule wouldn't honor their "lifetime" warranty (product less than 2 months old) which was disappointing but Amazon gave me a full refund. Happy I purchased through Amazon. br /
Good for the money and ease of storage April 28, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought this for Spring Break run from Indiana to Florida. It held up extremely well and without leaks. Although we didn't test it with too much rain. It held 4 large duffle bags and a medium suitcase along with other things stuffed around. The closure seemed well done and the hold down straps were strong. br /br /My only complaint is that it seemed to be missing 2 attaching straps from the bag to the car. It had 2 for attachment to the front of the bag to the front bar. But only 2 others, although there were places for 4 more attachments. I would have felt better with 2 additional straps. But nothing moved.br /br /I did notice quite a bit more wind noise, but that is to be expected. The best part is that it is now in a pack about the size of a large dictionary. I WAS thinking about a hard case, and for as little as I will use it, I believe this was certainly the correct choice. I had a hard shell case one time, and although it was great to use, it was a pain the othere 99% of the time it was packed away.br /br /I wouldn't go smaller than this one...
It served its purpose well April 27, 2008 We were returning from the winter in Flordia to NY. Needing more space than we had in our Pathfinder we purchased this roof top bag. It did a great job for us. It was very secure added no extra noise. I would reccomend it.
Thule 856 Nomad Rooftop Cargo Bag Review February 24, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Purchased this product for a ski trip in Colorado. Drove 2000 miles with much of it in snow storms. Everything was dry and had no problems taking the cargo bag on and off. It fit well on my Honda Odyssey which does have side bars on top but no cross bars. I would recommend this product to others.
Works well November 21, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had a good experience using this on a twelve hundred mile trip. Never gave me a problem. Long zippers make for easy loading.
