Great automatic litter box December 3, 2008 I have 4 of these litter boxes (6 cats) and have used one for at least 2 years. Have never had a mechanical problem and the cats seem to take to them quite well. I used to feel that the refills were wasteful but that problem was solved when I found Forever Litter Trays, which are plastic trays that replace the cardboard ones. It definitely seems to work best with the Fresh Step crystal litter.
It Stinks December 3, 2008 I have one 3 lb. kitten. The box and hood are great and the kitten likes the litter. But do not be fooled.....It doesn't handle odor the way other litter does! I still scoop everyday from under the cardboard lip.br /Before my Scoopfree came i was using a disposable box w/ litter (Cats Pride) Far superior litter! I will not be buying anymore replacement cartridges. I will use a permanent cartridge and fill w/ own litter. A waste of money!
it works!!! December 3, 2008 thank god...it works! every two weeks i replace the cartridge and my cats (2) are happy. what a great product!
Only as good as your cat will let it be... December 2, 2008 My unit:br /The basic ScoopFree with no dome.br /br /The basics:br / - This unit performs as promised.br / - It is automatic and WILL make noise as it runs. (Mine is in the basement and I can hear it when I am on the next floor up.)br / - Common sense, if you leave poop anywhere (exposed to air) it will smell.br / - The replacement cartridges are somewhat pricey, $15.br /br /So far, I've used this box for the past 3 months and have found that its success is solely dependent upon outside factors. The box itself is perfect and does as it says it will. Simple design makes it very light and easy to maneuver. I can see how it would last for quite some time.br /br /My cats:br /I have 2 older cats, 9 years old. One (Thomas) has had recurring urinary tract issues and the other (Braden) demands a clean box or he's going somewhere else.br /br /Issues encountered:br / - His royal highness has decided that he is no longer going to poop in this box or the other for that matter. (Tried going back to the manual box for a few days to use the rest of the regular litter before buying more cartridges with the crystals.) It now piles up next to the box. Obviously not the fault of the box.br /br /- Thomas, on the other hand, is a creature of habit and this litter box does not fit his method of habit. He will walk into the box and immediately squat and bury his "thing" in the litter. Since this is a "set it and forget it" box, he keeps peeing in the same spot until the cartridge is changed. Since I have been changing it as recommended, every 2 weeks for 2 cats, he has shown symptoms of having urinary tract issues again. The only way for Thomas to avoid constant exposure to the same dirty spot was to move the box around. The long power cord gives it a lot of flexibility; however this method requires me to touch the dirty box multiple times a week. (Dirty because it has no hood and one of them likes to pee on the side. Also, the recommended method of use is to take the lid of the replacement litter cartridge, flip it over and use it under the base. Even when using this method, some pee still ended up on the cement floor.)br /br / While I believe this box is a very good invention, it does not cut down on the amount of litter we bring in or expel. It does not account for male cats that bury their "thingie" in the crystals to pee and begins to smell horrible if you leave it for the maximum time recommended.br /br /All in all, this is a good box; however, I will be listing mine on Craigslist for someone else to give it a whirl.
Very Dissapointed - Overrated, VERY Expensive, Never again! December 2, 2008 I was probably one of the first people to buy one of these "Scoop-Free" litter boxes - about 2 years ago. I bought it as a gift for a new cat owner while I attended a focus group for cat owners that was sponsored by the Scoop-Free folks. The inventor/owner of the company was there on hand to extol the virtues of his new invention.br /br /It sounded good. I got a deal on the box, so it seemed like a good idea.br /br /The owner of the company promised a "Discount" on cartridges if you buy them in quantity. Otherwise, they cost $15 each. PetSmart was mentioned as a dealer that would have them in multi-packs at a discount - as was Amazon. (Six cartridges for $89 and change... Um - that's $15 per cartridge. Where's the discount!?)br /br /The "discount" is pretty lame. Nowhere near the savings the owner/inventor promised.br /br /That's only half of it.br /br /As others have mentioned, this litter box is NOT odor free! The solid waste is scooped up and sits is a tiny little compartment and it festers there - stinking and festering and getting moldy. IF you have more than one cat - or a larger cat - the undersized compartment QUICKLY overfills and won't even close - making sure the odor permeates your home. To make the litterbox a *little* less odor-full, you can remove some of the solid waste - but there goes the scoop-free claim.br /br /About that 30 days (and "forget it") - I suggest you forget about 30 days entirely. Even with one normal size cat on a normal diet - it won't go anywhere 30 days without attention. *Maybe* 2 weeks if you're very very lucky. With 2 cats - ONE week at the outside.br /br /Buy this litterbox if you have money to burn on cartridges ($15 apiece - no real discounts to be found) or want to impress your friends. (just make sure to clean out those cat potatoes before your buddies arrive!)br /br /PERHAPS if you don't mind fussing with dirty litterboxes, you could clean out the cartridge and refresh the soiled litter with bulk crystal litter. That might make it a little more affordable.br /br /Personally, I'm sorry I spent the money. Sorry I bought this as a gift for a friend - saddling her with the expensive refills. As it is - she only uses it when she goes out of town. (and when she gets back - the place reeks.) It's JUST too expensive to use for an "everyday" litterbox.br /br /Save your money. The litterbox that can go more than a couple of days without attention hasn't been invented yet.
