Finally November 30, 2008 This is my favorite litter box to date. Over the past 13 years I have tried regular litter boxes with scoopable litter, regular boxes with regular litter and frequent changes, LitterMaid deluxe (several different units), and this is my favorite so far. The keys to the success of this box is the crystal litter and simple design. Rather than try to scoop out all of the urine AND feces, the urine is absorbed into the crystal (keeping it away from finicky paws and neutralizing smell), while the feces is pushed into a collection chamber to minimize smell. The lack of problems with clumping and easy disposal of the ENTIRE waste tray are what make this product much better than the LitterMaid. It doesn't jam and there is no residual material on the rakes, because there is no clumping.br /br /The main problem with this product is the waste tray flimsiness. I have two average sized cats, and change it every 10 days (the most frequently recommended). The unabsorbed urine can seep through the bottom cardboard, and then it wicks along between the tray and your floor, making a mess. Similarly, if your cats like to pee on the sides of things occasionally like mine, the wicking action turns a small clean up into a big one. Also, the cardboard waste tray is somewhat floppy, and difficult to handle when it is dirty. The tray could be much improved by being made from thin plastic, and even better if it had tiny feet raising it off of the floor a few millimeters. The trays are already expensive, so presumably the added cost of a better tray design would have a minimal effect on cost.br /br /By the way, regarding other people's issues: I never had any problems acclimating my cats to the box and crystals; they took to it immediately. Also I think the box is very quiet, much more so that the LitterMaid devices I had previously. Regarding smell, this product is better than any other I have used, but of course you need to have realistic expectations. I recommend marking the tray change date in whatever calendar system you use, so that you don't forget to change it on schedule; you and your cats will be much happier.br /br /In summary, this is my favorite litter box to date, although it is somewhat expensive and not without some minor problems related to the trays. Everyone's situations and cats are different as evidenced by the very high and very low scores for this product, so you should just try out a highly rated solution such as this one, and if it doesn't work out, then return it and try the next solution, until you are satisfied.
How to improve on a good litter box design November 30, 2008 "Compared to the Littermaid and the Purrforma Plus, the Scoop Free litter box is far superior, but flawed. All of the 1 star ratings have the same complaints, crystals get smelly, leaky and very expensive.br /br /I own 3 cats and have made some changes to make the Scoop Free convenient and inexpensive to use.br /br /1) Purchase a flat non-stick cookie sheet 14"Wide x 17"L (up to 22"L) and line the bottom of the litter tray with it. Use tin snips to trim off handles and things that could interfere with the litter rake. Discard the cardboard lid that comes with the litter cartridge instead of putting it under the box.br /br /2) Cut slots in the litter trap lid so that you can easily pull it open without lifting up the box.br /br /3) Fill the box with standard clumping litter (premium--dust free, not crystals).br /br /Now the box will not smell and will maintain itself between uses throughout the day and your cat(s) will be very happy.br /br /You can lift up the lid on the litter trap and scoop it out only once a day and you will be happy. (I place a newspaper section on top of the litter and scoop onto it, fold it up and discard it.)br /br /So its no longer a Scoop Free but it's now a Scoop-Once-a Day (or even less if you have only 1 cat). Very convenient and cheap.br /br /Recommendation: you should always put something on the floor under the box to catch overspills that are the norm with all litter boxes.br /br /Best system I've had in a lifetime of cat lovin'. Maybe they should manufacturer some this way to get rid of those 1 star ratings."
Refills are a little pricey, but you DO get what you pay for these days!! November 27, 2008 The refills are pricey, but what a better price to pay for your loved family member than this!! Even Henry Ford would smile at the design of this puppy! br /br /Absolutely no problems, buy the litter catcher mat though!!! It's painful stepping on the strewn crystals in the middle of the night!
Your Kittie's Dream November 25, 2008 This unit was purchased to replaced an existing automatic litter box which had ceased working. I am so pleased with the unit that I have ordered a second one to replace the other existing litter box. No dust, no mess, no odor! Truly a dream for your special kitty.
Noisy November 22, 2008 On the front of the box, along with all the other great Scoop Free attributes, are the words "whisper quiet motor." Well, the motor itself may be that quiet, but the rest of the moving parts make enough noise to wake the dead.br /br /When the rake moves back and forth in its track, it's quite noisy. But what's even worse, as the rake moves, it twice changes its angle by flipping in its track. As it does so, it makes a VERY loud clunk. Maybe if you live in a house and stick the litter box in the basement, that's fine. But if you're in a one bedroom apartment, there is no avoiding that sound in the middle of the night.br /br /Secondly, the instructions tell you to place the Scoop Free unit near the old litter box until your cat(s) become acclimated to it. Given its large footprint, however, that may not be practical. Also, many people keep their litter boxes in the bathroom; in its instructions, the Scoop Free recommends against that because of the humidity.br /
