3 out of 5 stars 15 Days of Litter Control for the Pampered Cat   January 5, 2009
I have a 7 pound cat and this litter box is all his own. I've had it now for 3 months. First I used it without the hood. The cat became enfatuated with the scooper and the workings and kept the machine running every 20 minutes. After 15 days, the poop odor became unbearable though I didn't smell any urine. To stop the cat from playing with the scooper, I added the hood. It worked. The motor sound attracts the cat but the hood made it difficult for him to yank it when it stops moving. To better control the odor, I have added some additional powder which I put in first before adding the litter. This has helped. Still, after 15 days, the poop reservoir is full and sometimes starting to overflow, so I have to change it.br /br /Overall, it's better than scooping every day manually. But this comes at a price, the refills are not cheap (on sale, you can buy a regular litter box and litter for less than 1 refill) and, for me, I have to replace the refill twice a month. Overall, it would be about $360/year for me to keep this going--if it doesn't break down.

5 out of 5 stars multiple cat usage, very pleased   January 5, 2009
I have 6 cats and 2 of these boxes (yeah, I know I've turned into the "cat lady" up the street). I've been very pleased with the performance of this box AFTER a modification. I'm happy with the odor control as long as I keep up with it, these still require maintenance about every other day (I have them somewhat covered so that may make a difference after seeing some reviews). That said, the crystals do get all over, but so did other litters I tried. If you don't change in time before the crystals get saturated, the smell and mess gets awful. I get about a week between complete cleaning and for 6 cats/2 boxes, that makes me very happy! If I had room, I'd get a third box, but that's just not in the cards right now. Now for my money/labor saving modification: I made a plastic replacement for the tray that fits exactly the same as the refill tray except it stands off the ground about an extra 3-4" (Tap plastics here in bay area, they would make but too expensive, very easy to put together, just have them make the cuts you need and its ~$25 each). At the poop collector end of the tray I left the tray floor open, and made a ~5" wide "poop drawer" that fits under the collector end (this is why I made it stand off the floor an extra few inches). I line the poop drawer with plastic bags (grocery bags fit ok, might want to make some more detailed measurements to fit what bag you want or to fit better). Ok, so now I buy the big bags of crystals for ~$18 and that does 2 boxes so it cuts the cost in half over buying the regular refill trays, and I clean every couple days by scooping out the most soaked crystals in the tray and just dump the poop trays through a scoop to sift out the poop and recapture the clean crystals from the drawer. The weekly cleaning is just a matter of using the scoop and scraping it all into the drawer, then spray with the petzyme stuff for odor control and refill. It's great and the only suggestion/complaint I have is that the auto scoop/sifter should be stainless steel as after a year or two they are significantly rusted.

4 out of 5 stars Great for 1 cat not so great for 2--3.5 Stars   January 3, 2009
We've had this litter box for a little over a year. When we had one cat it was awesome and definitely a 5 star product. The cat took to it well, the odor control was excellent, and we got about 3.5 weeks on a single cartridge. All that changed when we added a second cat 3 months ago. I'd now give it 3 stars.br /br /It's a lot more expensive to use with two cats. We normally get 7 days before needing to change cartridges. I can push it to 8, but one of our cats normally lets us know about it by pooping in front of the box. Best for everyone to change it on the 7th day. If we wait until day 8, urine usually soaks through the box and onto the linoleum. It's not too bad, but it has caused the area where the box sets to be bleached out.br /br /Initially odor was a problem. Adding baking soda when we change the litter has helped drastically. Without the baking soda we were changing the cartridges every 5 days.br /br /We've also noticed a problem with the sensor not working as well with two cats. I think it's because they get in peeing wars occasionally (thankfully only in the litter box) and the sensor has no idea when a cat has left the box and when it hasn't. I normally manually run the rakes a couple of times a day to get more use from the cartridge and to keep the odor under control.br /br /Even with the draw backs I'd happily buy it again. Convenience does have a price and for me it's worth it. However, if you're looking at buying this box, are on a tight budget and have two cats, you might want to pass. The cartridges are about 16.00. So you can easily do the math to discover this is an expensive box to use on a regular basis. We buy our cartridges from Amazon and it's ~100.00 every 6 weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Best Cat Box Ever   December 30, 2008
I bought this litter box because I was going on vacation and no one would be here to scoop out the litter box. I used it a month before leaving and my cat took to it right away. I have 2 cats. I had only one cat in the house when I was gone and when I returned the litter box was as though no cat lived in this house.br /I had someone come in and check on my cat. They told me that they had to look around the house for the litter box because they could not smell anything.br /The trays are expensive but to have a house that doesn't smell is worth it. My cat that uses it the most is only 8 months old. My other cat is 8 Years old and weighs in at 18 pounds. The box is working perfectly. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Haven't bought it yet - Can anyone find a decorative litter box cover it will fit in?   December 30, 2008
I haven't purchased this yet, but from the reviews, it sounds like the best choice for a self-cleaning litter box. My only reservation is that I can't seem to find a decorative litter box enclosure that is large enought to accomodate this. Please let me know if anyone has located one. Thank you!
