Amazon.com Review Ideal for a household with a large cat or more than one cat, this big, self-cleaning litter box eliminates most odors while keeping the litter pleasingly fresh for tabby. It's ingenious in design: a cat entering the box triggers a sensor; the sensor sets a timer that counts off 10 minutes; then a rake runs through the litter, scooping out clumps and depositing them in a plastic container at the box's end; the container is automatically sealed until the next cat visit, when the raking cycle opens the container for another deposit. (Twelve reusable, disposable containers are included, each 13 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3-1/2 inches deep.) The litter box can be plugged into a wall socket (AC adapter included) or operated on eight D-cell batteries (not included). It comes with a durable carpeted ramp that leads a cat into the box and cleans its paws on the way out. For safety, the rake stops and reverses at the slightest touch if an object gets in the way. If a cat re-enters the box before the initial 10 minutes have elapsed, the timer automatically resets. The litter box is made of hard plastic and measures 29 inches long, 8-7/8 inches high, and 16-3/4 inches wide. For proper operation, it requires premium, clumping litter but does not need as much as a nonautomated litter box of the same size. For cleaning, the litter tray can be detached. Instructions for acclimating a cat to the box are included. --Fred Brack

This is a bad product July 30, 2008 I sent the product back. I received the product and it did not work right out of the box. I called customer service and they had me try some strange process to "reset" the device. After repeated attempts, I gave up and sent it back. Additionally, the product is cheap plastic and not sturdy at all.
Always Clean Litter July 30, 2008 I really like this product. The litter is always clean and I have never had a problem with it at all. I can go away for the weekend and never worry about the box becoming dirty. I think that this larger unit is better than the smaller one and worth the extra money. My cat has no fear of using the box and I feel she appreciates always having fresh litter in the box too.
Better than scooping... July 26, 2008 I bought the Littermaid about 5 years ago and it lasted about 3 years which is pretty good. The Good: The cat liked it. It kept the dog out of the kitty roca. No more scooping by hand. Lasted over 3 years without major problems. The Bad: It was pretty smelly-as smelly as a normal litter box. The trap door did not close all the way so it let odor out. The cartridges filled up quickly (my cat was a relatively light user) even with unused litter. It was loud-kind of embarrassing to explain to guest what that noise was in the next room. The rake got gunked up.
All in all I was happy with it but I had never tried any other automated litter box before. After it died, I switched to a normal litter box but I have now purchased a "Scoop Free Automatic Litter Box". I think the Scoop Free is already proving to be very superior to the Littermaid. I've only had it a couple of days so I won't review it yet but I can already say that it is MUCH quieter and has no smell so far. Before using the Scoop Free I would have rated the Littermaid with 4 stars but now I'm only giving it 2 stars. I plan on purchasing the Forever tray or Permatray for my Scoop Free once I determine that it is as great as it seems.
Poor Product - do not buy it!!! July 24, 2008 They call this a self cleaning litter box? Maybe its because you have to clean it yourself!! The forks constantly get caked up with wet litter, the motor screams like its moving cement, and the box needs constant cleaning. This leads to more time maintaining the box and arguments with my wife. Spend the money on a good dinner and scoop the poop manually.
LitterMaid Litter Box gets 4 paws up!! July 18, 2008 I just received delivery yesterday of my Littermaid LM900 litter box. This is my second Littermaid, the previous one having been purchased over 10 years ago. It was still working fine, but my cat preferred to use the dog door and go outside, so the litter box was lost in the abyss of the "storage shed". Anyway, I have a new kitty, so I decided to purchase another Littermaid. I must admit, I almost didn't do it, after reading the online reviews. I finally decided to go with the "basic" model LM900. It arrived ready for set up and was comparable in construction to the one I had owned previously, probably even improved. My kitty took to it right away and even sits and waits to see the scooper in action. I highly recommend the white Kitty Cabana--it covers the box, gives kitty some privacy, and makes the entire structure look like a Shiek's tent. My older "doggie door" cat is now even eyeing the Littermaid. I think it works great, my kitty loves it, and it is much less noxious than any other box I've ever used. (I was using the "roll over on its side" and collect the waste in a drawer model). Great product for the price!
