Well, my cat knew when the filter wasn't there, so yeah, HE needs the filter May 20, 2008 I was finished cleaning my Drinkwell fountain and didn't realize I had the last filter. I didn't bother putting the filter back in. Why would Frank, my cat, know the difference. Frank refused to drink from the fountain. He has been using it religiously for ten years. At 2:00 a.m. in the morning, he was sucking on the tub faucet, which is something he hasn't done in years. So, yeah, the filters do make a difference in taste and I immediately ordered some more online. (I dug the older, 6 week old filter out of the wastebasket and Frank went back to the fountain.)I had to respond to the person who said it doesn't make a difference. It sure did to my Frank. I bought the fountain when he just wouldn't drink water out of a bowl and his kidneys were abnormal at age two. He's twelve now and his kidneys are dandy. I love the Drinkwell, filter and all. I want my Frank around a long time. Without the drinkwell, his kidneys wouldn't have lasted long. That just shows you how important water is to your kidneys, people and pets alike. Drink up!
Keeps the grime and mildew out May 14, 2008 I don't know how well the filter actually improves the taste of my cat's water, but I do know that the filter seems to trap the hair and some of the grime that somehow gets into the water. I find myself cleaning the Drinkwell less often because the filter keeps the water fresher for a longer period of time than without a filter.
FUTD Key: Help Your Cat Drink More Water May 11, 2008 My cat has Feline Urinary Tract Disease. This most frequently occurs in male cats, typically when they are kittens. I learned about his problem when, as a kitten, he started sitting in his litter box and would cry out in pain because he was unable to pass waste. The vet explained he needs to eat a low magnesium diet and drink as much water as possible. He suggested we get him a water fountain and clean it often to keep the water fresh. My cat loves the water fountain and the replacement filters keep the water fresh so my cat drinks water throughout the day and night. This has been the key to helping him live with FUTD! He is 10 years old!
Needed accessory for the fountain May 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
You don't NEED this filter, per se, but it makes the fountain last much longer between cleaning, and it's just better for the animals (yeah, I know, cats and dogs lick themselves, and drink water from swamps, why do they need filtered water?!). These filters work well, they're easy to clean (once or twice a month), and they work longer than they suggest. Buy them in bulk online to reduce shipping charges, and these filters don't end up costing much at all.
Works fine. May 2, 2008 3 filters to a pack, easy to open (minimal) package (low waste), fit fine, work fine - everything as expected. They recommend replacing every month, but every other month works fine. :)
