5 out of 5 stars Great machine, Great support   November 10, 2008
I have owned my Cat Genie for a little over a year now. I definetly get use out if it for my 4 adult cats. We unplug it at night because it is in our master bath, and it can be a little loud while we are sleeping. Because we have more cats than it is designed for, and we don't let it run for atleast 8 hours a day, it does get clogged occasionally. However it's not too bad to clear it out. I can usually unclog it in about 15 minutes with a good cleaning. We have ours In our spare bathtub, so the dog can't get to it. Cleaning out the thing when it is clogged is as hard as removing the cover/processor, and turning on the shower to clean out the rest. br /br /When we allow it to run 4 times a day, it never gets clogged. It's only when we let poo dry out all night and build up. When it scoops that much in the morning, the accumulated granules make the clog.br /br /Customer Service is excellent. I have called them several times. When we moved it to our spare bathroom, there was not enough water pressure to run it off the toilet line. So they walked me through installing it from the sink line. I have broken the little T connector twice, probably using too much pressure with a monkey wrench. They overnighted me a new one both times for free. I honestly didn't expect to recieve it the very next day.br /br /Great product, great company.

4 out of 5 stars Love - Hate. Mostly love. Great Company!   November 8, 2008
I have read the previous reviews and agree with almost ALL of them basically, the good and the bad. I've had mine for about 9 months. I've experienced the poopy water that would not drain and the unbelievably annoying beeps. I've experienced the olfactory experience of blown-dry poop with hint of perfume on many occasions. (I automatically start my bathroom fan running when I start the CatGenie) That is quite unlike any other bodily experience I have even had. The poopy water experience at, say, 2 am, is quite life-changing too while your cats are pacing feverishly to use the unusable litter box. I have three cats and all of them adjusted to it perfectly. None of them is freaked out by the horrific noise it makes while churning and disposing of cat poop. In fact, they often like to watch it in action. One in particular loves lying on top of the domed-cover (tuxedo package) while it blow dries because it's so warm. During my first non-draining water experience I called Petnovation's toll free number in desperation. The young tech support fellow was as patient and kind as I was not. He walked me through one test after another until the problem was identified. In truth I had precipitated the problem by overfilling the bowl with the granules and the water sensor got dirty as a result. Mea culpa.br /br /Since then things have been pretty good - the occasional need to clean the water sensor or remove a cat hair plug from the drain. I've learned to live with all of that for the sheer convenience of not having to lug 40 pound pails of cat litter in (and many more pounds of it used OUT) br /br /But what impressed me most is the company! First their tech support was wonderful! And most recently they engineered an improved hopper system to reduce (eliminate) cat hair plugs and water sensor problems. But what is so amazing to me is that, no questions asked, they will send it to you for 1 cent plus $5 shipping (no shipping charge at all if you're ordering other supplies). It practically reinvents the process but at virtually no cost they send you the upgrade! Just log on to their website. Now THAT is loyalty to your customers! Cheers Petnovations!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product   October 31, 2008

We have now had the CatGenie Automatic Cat Litter for about one month. Overall, so far, we are very happy with this product. We haven't had to clean anything (except see below) for a month now. I had read reviews about cats not using the litter box. We have two cats; one is pretty good and even got to the green ring (the last one) on the cat potty training thing (but then couldn't do it without pawing litter so never got past the green stage), the other cat is fairly skittish and NEVER used any stages of the toilet training, in fact, started using the ash in our fireplace as litter. Having said all of that neither cat (even the skittish one) had any problem using the CatGenie, obviously that may not be the case for everybody, but our cats had absolutely no problem and watching the CatGenie clean (which is notoriously disturbing) did NOT traumatize them, they seem intrigued by it.br /br /Decription: Dump in the pellets, put in the cleaning cartridge, hook up hoses (probably hardest part but still fairly easy), plug in and your done installing it. One word, I read a review about people flooding their apartment with this thing, I don't know how they did this, unless their plumbing was bad to begin with: turn off the water supply to your toilet (by closing the valve right by the toilet), unscrew the hose going to the toilet, install splitter (supplied with CatGenie), reconnect toilet hose, connect CatGenie hose, and your done with the plumbing. After that, just hope that your cats use it, we put out old LitterMaid in with the CatGenie, but I'm not sure if that did anything--all I now is that it took probably one to two nights before I started noticing the cats definitely using the CatGenie. To clean you can set it to go off automatically (if you're really lazy, but we just never did that) or you can just push the button to clean it whenever you feel like it needs to be cleaned (for two cats that's about 2-3 times a day for us).br /br /pros: Fully automatic cleaning (there really isn't anything else, isn't that why you're looking at the CatGenie), I mean fully automatic, no scooping up poop or anything, if it stinks just hit a button and 30 minutes later the poops in your toilet (or down your wast drain in your laundry room) and the litter box smells spring fresh.br /br /Cons (all minor things): Biggest concern Cats track the plastic pellets EVERYWHERE (which requires vacuuming or sweeping, but vacuuming is not difficult). Second biggest concern is space, so make sure you have space for this thing; it takes up slightly less space than an actual toilet (it's about half the height, but about the same girth). My wife said that the drain wouldn't fit with our other hoses in the laundry room so we have it hooked up in a bathroom to a toilet. The second con is that it seemed to leak (this is probably just our particular piece of equipment though, I'm too lazy to call since it's a minor problem, so right now we have a towel where it leaks and I plan on putting teflon tape on the threads) (I have NOT contacted customer service about this so I'm not making any claims to how they handled this).br /br /Overall: I really am not complaining at all about the CatGenie, just stating the facts, I am extremely happy with it and would say it's definitely worth the money if you can afford it (which we probably couldn't but we got it anyways). I would highly recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Freakin Awesome!!!   October 22, 2008

The CatGenie is the most Freakin Awesome product for house cats. We have 3 cats. Many years spent scooping litter have taken many years of happiness away from us. A couple of years ago we tried the LitterMaid system. It was an ok system, but still produced a lot of ..material.. that needed to be emptied. When we moved into a new place with enough room by the toilet to fit the CatGenie, it was a no brainer.br /The CatGenie was an easy install, following the directions and using a wrench. It took about 30 or 40 minutes after unpacking. We put in the solution, granules and fired it up. We followed the enclosed recommendations for getting the cats used to the machine. Left it off for a couple of days, next to the increasingly dirty litter box. After a couple of days, the cats 'discovered' the new litter box. We were able to discard the old box and start up the CatGenie to run 3x/day.br /It now been running for months. We've left it running while out of town without any problems. We did change to the unscented Sani Solution, which we recommend. We also recommend adding some kind of mat under the CatGenie to decrease the vibrations as well as control the granule tracking. We picked up a litter control mat at Target, quick and cheap. We also opted for the sides and dome to keep everything inside.br /Let me say that its difficult to put a price on happiness, but the price of a CatGenie is a small price to pay.

1 out of 5 stars READ THIS BEFORE BUYING!   October 21, 2008

I really wanted to like Cat Genie. It sounded great... never having to clean my litter box again. And unfortunately, I believed all the positive reviews here on Amazon. PLEASE DONT BELIEVE IT! This product is absolutely worthless and will make you VERY frustrated. br /br /If you still don't believe me, then at least don't buy it on Amazon, because your "90 day money back guarantee" will be NULL AND VOID by the manufacturer and will shrink down to the Amazon 30 Day return. If have already make the mistake of buying this and the Cat Genie does not work out of the box SEND IT BACK immediately. If not, you will most likely never see your money again and will be forced to throw it away. Customer support will try to send you parts to fix it, which simply prolongs the return grace period. (Of course they won't tell you this until you try to return it)br /br /I will try to make my point as briefly as I can, so you don't waste time or money on this product.br /br /The basic problem is that there are too many moving parts that can easily fail. When the unit does fail, your cat will be very upset and use your favorite jeans as a litter box. And, you will have to spend your time cleaning and fixing your very foul smelling litter box. br /br /A preview of some things that WILL go wrong: br /br /Problem: The granules get stuck in the impeller as a result of your cat simply burying the litter or the arm scooping up wet granules. Result: The box cannot expel the waste and the litter becomes soaking wet. Your cat will not use a flooded litter box. You will have to take the unit apart and stick your hand in a horrid brew of cat pee and poop. This is a messy and time consuming job that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.br /br /Problem: The scoop will not get all the poop. The box is automated and has no idea whether it collected all of the poop. It will miss some, and smaller bits will go right through the scoop. Result: When this happens, the uncollected poop will stay on top and will get blow dried several times. If you want a preview of one of the most rancid smells you are likely to experience in your lifetime, then go blow dry the poop in your litter box. br /br /Remember, the granules do not have order control like the litter you use. This means that the box will smell until the wash cycle is run. The wash cycle takes over 20 minutes and is loud and smelly. br /br /Basically, this product has been nothing but problem since the day I bought it. Customer service basically stringed me along, sending me new parts. I did everything they asked me to do, replacing parts, going through diagnostics over the phone, etc. And when I had had enough (I was still in my 90 days) they said "too bad", you bought it on Amazon and we cannot take it back. So now I have to throw away the Cat Genie and all the extras I bought. Do yourself a favor and don't buy this product...I sure wish I hadn't. br /
