5 out of 5 stars The automatic litter box I've been waiting for!!   August 2, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I have owned a few other automatic litter boxes before this one and I have never been so happy with one like this. So far it's been the cleanest, easiest and most reliable cat box I've ever owned.br /Like I've read in other reviews, maybe it's only downfall is how expensive the cartridges are but the fact that it is so much easier to change, cleaner to handle, the smell is almost completely contained definately makes up for it to me.br /I would 100% recommend this litter box to anyone who love their cats but hates the chore of changing the litter box!

2 out of 5 stars Not for large or older cats!   July 31, 2008

We "inherited" my daughter's cat when she found a roommate with a dog. Not enjoying the task of cleaning the litter box I went in search of something else. I have to agree with all of the reviews that say feces gets stuck on the rake, behind the rake and on the holding compartment. Also after the cat saw the rake moving in the box and the loud noise it made we started having problems with him urinating on the furniture. I think it basically just scared him and was far too small for a 12 pound cat. With the hood on we also found that every flying insect in the house was attracted to the smell and that made it even more disgusting to have to clean it out. I am out a lot of money since I bought a 6-month supply of refill cartridges for a system our cat won't use. I thought about mixing the crystals with our regular litter to at least be able to use it up, but the other reviewers are also correct about that. The crystals don't adhere well to the excrement and go all over the floor leaving a bad smell since there isn't enough of the clumping litter to cover the job. Don't waste your money unless you have a kitten that will grow into a small cat.

5 out of 5 stars I'm MAD about ScoopFree!   July 30, 2008

*UPDATE: I've now had the Scoopfree for 48 days and I have just now changed the first cartridge it came with. Did it need to be changed after 48 days? Yes- but it still had minimal odor and the waste was contained-trap door closed-nothing overflowing. I had to leave town for 3 weeks unexpectedly-otherwise I probably would have changed it after 40 days. The crystals were almost all green/yellow but no leaks. This is by far the best cat litter product I can imagine. I changed the cartridge and wiped down the surfaces with a little natural cleaner and a papertowel It took less than 5 minutes-quick and easy and not gross at all. My cat still loves it and uses it with no problems. br /A couple of tips: I do swirl the crystals every couple of days to distribute the litter evenly and because I thought it would help keep the crystals from becoming too saturated and leak. However after leaving it unattended for 3 weeks I realized it does not become over saturated at all. However I will still stir it to keep it evenly distributed. I also keep it near an open window. This might be one reason I NEVER EVER smell it.*br /br /This is by far the best litter box experience I have had! OK-full disclosure-I've only had the ScoopFree a week-but I love it! br /It is very quiet, no odor, works perfectly and my cat took to it immediately. My cat had never used crystal litter before but that didn't seem to matter to her. She recognized it as litter immediately and "used" it. br /I've read many reviews about this litter box and I have seen that some people have problems with it. I think one reason it is working for me is my cat is not finicky, she is only 8lbs and is a "light user"-meaning she only goes 2-3 times a day and she has never had any issues regarding going outside of a litter box or any other behavior quirks. I'm not saying my cat is perfect, but, if she did have some of those issues, or if I had a multiple cat household, I might think twice about getting the ScoopFree. She had also used a Littermaid for a few years so she was already used to a weird mechanical litter box. br /Although my cat is not high maintenance, I am. I will gag if I have to see a dirty litterbox-let alone clean it. And I'm very picky about smell. With this box, I find myself lifting the hood and stirring the crystals-not because it needs it, but because I can't stay away from this cool contraption with the pretty crystals! It looks perfectly clean all of the time and there are no gag inducing clumps of litter or noxious smells. They really do soak and shrink the bad stuff. I think the cartridge will last at least a full month judging by how almost empty it is now. I'm going to wait out the 90 day return policy and if I'm still happy with it, purchase one of the perma/forever trays to be kinder to the environment. I think ScoopFree should sell those too!br /P.S. One gripe: The hood I ordered separately came damaged-not enough to go through the hassle to send it back but enough to make me gripe. Amazon boxed it with no padding or styrofoam.

3 out of 5 stars Gets Stinky Fast!   July 27, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

First off, the cats do love it and took to it very quickly.br /They better! Because essentially it costs them more to poop then it does my whole family.br /The downside is, cost and it hasn't kept me from needing to empty out the poop every 2 days. I have 2 cats with big butts and they poop a lot, so I still have to clean it out, once the poop gets raked away. Otherwise, it gets VERY STINKY!br /This whole "walk away for 15-30 days" is, well I'd say, misleading.br /The good news is -- they aren't stepping in it and tracking it across the baby's face, like in the old litter box. br /Makes it worth it!

1 out of 5 stars Way too many good reviews   July 24, 2008

We have two brand new kittens. I also have a dog that likes to dine out of the litter box. For this reason, I thought an electric box made sense. The mess would be scooped away before the dog had a chance to get to it. The first time one of the kittens used it, the smell was horrendous. I waited an hour hoping it would dissipate. Unfortunately, this was not the case. I had to scoop out the one poop, dispose of it outside immediately and light a match. I can't even imagine what the smell would be like with multiple messes in the box sitting for weeks. Maybe the other reviewers have olfactory issues and suffer from anosmia (an inability to smell). I cannot recommend this product.
