Cats reach social maturity between two to four years of age, so your younger female cat may now be subtly challenging the older boy’s authority. You may not even be aware of this. It may also have been exacerbated by moving to the smaller house where there’s less territory to share. I’d suggest you increase the vertical territory. Add some cat trees, or clear off some shelf spaces and create

Wow, you have a lot going on here. A flicking tail indicates arousal and can be a precursor to attack. Lying on the back also can be a readiness for defense (not necessarily gentle submission). All four clawed feet are in position to do damage, you see. Purring actually tends to be a signal that indicates, “I am no threat.” First off, cats don’t tend to growl and hiss during play, so if the

At a year of age, a cat’s level of play naturally ramps downward. While the older boy’s lack of interest may influence this some, probably the girl kitty simply has matured into her more adult personality. I don’t think this has anything to do with her being unhappy or the two cats not liking each other. Cats with different personalities can and do enjoy spending time with each other, whethe

Oh, poor Oliver! That’s a prime example of how a single traumatic event can be remembered for months or years by a cat. Oliver likely doesn’t even remember the dustpan, only that he associates your friend with “something scary.” So you need to try and change that association.Does Oliver have a favorite toy or treat? When your friend visits, make sure that he has lots of smelly, fantastic c

I applaud your concern about safety for your kitties. There are some options for making the outdoors safe for cats. If you have an existing wooden fence that the cats cannot get under or through, you could look into the www.catfencein.com or www.purrfectfence.com products. These do-it-yourself kits either stand alone, or attach to existing structures like wooden fences, to make them cat-proof and

If a female has been fixed, will she still have spotting? She is 8 months old.
Submitted 58 days ago
A female cat that has been spayed will no longer experience a heat cycle and will not show any other signs of estrus such as yowling, rolling or spotting. If a cat has blood on their back end or in their urine, this is not normal and should be called to the attention of your veterinarian. A physical examination and perhaps laboratory testing is needed to determine the cause of the problem.

All of the cats in our area, including a few of mine, have colds. What can we do for them?
Submitted 58 days ago
Often upper respiratory infections are viral in nature and easily spread from cat to cat. In some cases antibiotics may be useful to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections. Keeping cats vaccinated also helps diminish upper respiratory infections. When a cat shows signs of a respiratory infection they should be isolated from other cats to prevent the disease from spreading to other indivi

Some cats actually do like cat videos and will watch them when they are provided. In other situations a cat enjoys a window perch where they can watch outdoor animals. Rotating toys on a daily basis, providing climbing towers, boxes to climb into and feeder toys can all enrich the environment and keep an indoor cat stimulated and happy.

There are numerous factors that influence lifespan in our companion cats. Even “healthy” cats are vulnerable to many diseases as they age. Disorders of the endocrine system such as hyperthyroidism or diabetes are common in older cats. Kidney decline and kidney failure are also often diagnosed in our elderly companion cats. Almost 90% of cats older than eleven years of age experience arthri

Each cat is quite individual when it comes to the quality, intensity and frequency of purring. Some cats purr so softly that you can barely hear them while others sound like a car motor! It might help to teach your kitten to sleep in her own bed nearby on the floor. Not only will it make her a bit more independent, it may allow your husband to get good night’s sleep.
