Default Kitten has some "Maine Coon" genetic background. It has licked itself for five months

There are multiple possible causes for this including parasitic conditions such as mites (demodex or scabies), fungal infections like ringworm, allergic conditions, or bacterial. If the "wounds" are seeping you could have a potential secondary bacterial infection so I think it is important you have Kitten be seen. For most of these conditions some kind of medical intervention will likely need to be done. It sounds like all your good care has turned this kitten around but Kitten may need a little extra help to get over the hump.
