Great question. This is an issue that is very hard for us veterinarians and one that can be frustrating for owners. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to determine a cat's age. When they are below 6-7 months we can tell an age based on when their teeth are coming in. It is possible for young cats to have significant dental disease, specifically severe gingivitis and possible cavity-like lesions in their teeth. On the flip side though, it would be unusual to have a young cat with very heavy tartar and an infected mouth.
