I am sorry to hear that Scratch is having a hard time. The signs you describe in Scratch make me think of high blood pressure. Other conditions such as a stroke, cancer or infectious disease could cause the signs you describe but with Scratch's age, I would first rule out hypertension. Cats that have high blood pressure can have unresponsive pupils, blindness and detached retinas. When the retina detaches, the back of the eye as viewed through the ophthalmoscope, is red due to hemorrhage. You could ask your veterinarian to check his blood pressure or if she does not have the equipment, you could find another general veterinarian who has a blood pressure monitor. High blood pressure is a treatable disease in our cats, although it can often go with another condition like kidney disease or thyroid disease. The blindness can sometimes be resolved if the blood pressure is treated but left untreated it can do damage to other organs. Seeing a specialist is often not as expensive as people think. Call to find out the cost for just the consult; you may be surprised. And if you go, you are always within your rights to turn down procedures if they are outside your budget.
