Your poor Ocicat. The first thing is to make sure your cat's not attacking her tail due to a medical condition, like a neurological problem, skin disease or injury. Hopefully your veterinarian did a complete physical exam. If you haven’t already, it may not be a bad idea to also get some routine blood work and an x-ray of the tail. If all of this is normal and any medical cause is ruled out, then we can consider it behavioral. Cats do sometimes start this behavior and we often do not know why. To treat it, we usually do a combination of medical therapy and behavioral intervention. Ovaban can be used for the medical therapy, but is often not a first choice due to its many side effects in cats. Ovaban can suppress the adrenal glands, cause transient diabetes and may be linked to certain cancers. In general, psychoactive drugs like Prozac or Valium related medications are more likely to help. If your cat is damaging her tail, you may need to resort to an e-collar to prevent damage. It would be ideal to meet with a veterinary behaviorist if there is one in your area. Otherwise, some behaviorists or some of the universities with veterinary schools will do phone consultations. In the mean time, examine the house for any thing your cat could consider stressful. Most of our pets have a relatively stress-free life but sometimes even the slightest change can cause a compulsive type behavior like you are seeing. Good luck with this and let us know if you have more questions.
