Exclamation A Safety Warning for Pet Owners ... Not Graphic

This warning came into one of the dog lists, but could equally apply to cats ... I've caught Dino doing this very thing.

From another dog list.

I was working at my computer this afternoon when I heard a sound I could
not identify. Thinking Kyri was into some mischief, I called her, but
she didn't come. The sound continued so I jumped up and followed it til
to my horror I found my dog in a corner of the front hall, with a
cellophane bag over her head, trying desperately to breathe, but with
each breath the suction worsened and pulled the bag tighter over her head!

I grabbed it and yanked it off of her and she began to breathe normally
again within a minute or so....dear God was I scared!

I would never have thought of this as a hazard, so please be warned.

It was a cellophane bag, which had come from Trader Joe's, with a snack
called Pirates Booty in it...a kind of fluffy cheesy kind of snack. The
same sort of bag you might find potato chips in or popcorn
or.....whatever. Perry had finished the food and had put the bag in his
wastebasket near his desk. Kyri must have been attracted by the smell ,
pulled the bag out of the wastebasket and put her head in the opening,
trying to lick the last bits of food out of the bottom of the bag. It
was a big enough bag that it reached over her eyes and close to her ears.

I don't know why she wasn't trying to paw the bag off of her head, but
she wasn't. She was just standing there, with her head down, trying to
breathe and with each breath the cellophane expanded and contracted,
which was the sound I heard from the next room. Without that sound I
would have had no clue that she was in trouble ...and I don't even want
to think about that.

There are plenty of warnings about plastic bags and small children, but
I have never seen a warning about cellophane potato chip bags, not for
chldren or dogs....but it was sure terrifying.

Please be aware that these are a danger...especially as the smell of
food makes them attractive.

I am so grateful Kyri is ok.

Thank you for the warning. Everybody should be aware of this. I'm careful to not leave any kind of plastic bags around. Anastasia is so curious, so this could happen. The only bags I leave for her are big paper bags and I cut off the handles.
