Default New To Cats ~ Trying to save 4 lives ~ Help!

Hey all, Im Kylie, Im new and I hope you can help me! (I posted on another forum when this all happened but haven't gotten many replies and im researching online like mad)

I got a call from my boyfriends mom on Thursday they found 4 abandoned kittens, really young! They went to the vet and he gave them some formula and a bottle and sent them on their way. Not very good imo. she brought them here and wants my help cause im the "animal expert" and I do know a ton about a lot of animals (mostly horses) but have never been in this kind of situation before. I have put them in a nice big box with a heating pad wrapped in a towel, a couple socks filled with rice that I throw in the microwave every couple of hours and a stuffed horse to make them feel comfortable. I only think they are maybe 5 days old. The smallest is 3 ounces, the next is 3.5, the next is 4.2 and the biggest is 4.5ounces.

I've officially had the kittens for a little over 3 days. And I'm worried about them. They are going to the vet tomorrow at 1040am but I would like advice from you guys too.

I have been having a hard time getting them to go potty, I stimulate them with a warm wet paper towel, and 90% of the time they will all urinate. But they almost never poo, when they do it looks good (I think) kind of a yellow brown with a soft toothpaste consistancy. One of them (Ziggy) was having Diarrhea so I added some water to dilute the KMR in case it might be too rich and he hasn't had any Diarrhea today, so thats good I think, but im still worried that they seem to only poo once a day.

Also, Ziggy is small and hasn't gained any weight since I got them, Magic and Hope seem to be thriving they're larger, louder, eat better and move better then the other 2 and have gained a full ounce since I got them. The littlest one oreo eats like crazy but has actually lost half an ounce, so im REALLY worried about him. We are estimating them to be about 5 days old and they are getting fed 5-6 cc's every 3-4 hours. Is that ok? Any help and advice would be great! Thanks!

You are amazing and wonderful to work so hard at saving these little babies.

I'm no expert on newborn care, but really it sounds like they are doing fairly well, and they look okay judging by the pics. I don't know how often an infant should poop, but if they are pooping at least once a day via your stimulation...it seems to me that should be enough to keep them going until they see the vet tomorrow.

There are other people here with more knowledge about infant kitten care, hopefully someone will be in soon.

Welcome to the board, and please do keep us updated on Ziggy Magic Hope and Oreo.

I am curious as to why they were sure the kittens were abandoned and the mama hadn't just gone off to get herself some dinner?

If they were truly abandoned you should be prepared to find there may be something wrong with them. Often a mother cat will abandon kittens that are sick or off in someway. They know these things.

But we will think positive, because they sound okay, so far!

Keep us posted!

by the way. perhaps something just a touch rougher than a paper towel for the bowel stimulation....could you get your hands on a baby washcloth? You need something soft, yes, but with texture to it, a cat's tounge is quite rough.

you might want to try to reduce the size of your pictures and repost them.

You can edit your post to remove the current pictures, then after reducing them, edit again to post them, or just post another reply. Because they are so large, many people may have trouble getting them to load, and as a result will not be able to reply in your thread. Are you using photobucket? Photobucket has an option for sizing before you upload the pic to the site. choose the "medium" or even the "small" size

My god girl you are doing an absolute fantastic job, well done. Just keep doing what your doing with them and I am sure they will all grow up to be strong independant cats. You have everything covered I cannot think of a single thing to suggest.

Just got home from the vet, everyone got a thumbs up. I was totally wrong about the sexes, lol. The 2 blackand white bi-colors are males and the 2 black ones are females so now we have to think of new names smile.gif

They were weighed and their official weights are

Oreo - 74.5 grams
Ziggy - 86 grams
Hope - 115 grams
Magic - 128.5grams

So theres quite a difference in them. She said that even though Oreo is the smallest that he seems healthy. Shes the most worried about ziggy, he seems to be the weakest. I'll keep everyone updated

Default My Babies

Tim

My girl gave birth to two beautiful babies but had to have a c-section as the other kitten was to big, sadly this one died, but she has two beauties MJ (Girl) and Grubz (Boy), Minx is a great mum. The kittens are coming up to four weeks old they are moving around a lot trying to climb biting and playing together, how long before they are weaned as I have never had kittens before MJ weighs 1 pound and Grubz is not far behind at 13 ounces. I have Kitten wet food, biscuits and milk what else would you suggest.
