Default My cat is pulling out all his hair

My 10 year old cat has suddenly started pulling out all his hair. He licks an area until it becomes matted and then pulls out the mat. The process takes him about ten minutes. He started doing this about 2 weeks ago when I was having some medical problems and my family wasn't dealing with the situation well. I figured that since he had to leave his last home when his previous owners was having medical problems, he might be picking up on the same stressful environment and was afraid that the same thing might happen again. I'm fine now, but he continues to do it. In other words, the stress has pass, but he going bald. What can/should I do??

I think you are correct about his stress and the reason for it. I can tell you care about him very much and understand cats.

You can get some Rescue Remedy, a calming tincture, which can be added to his water, or rubbed onto his face, this will help him feel less stressed, and a feliway plug in diffuser, which emits calming pheromones into the air, helping him feel more secure.

I recommend trying these remedies first, prior to resorting to medication, though I do think you should bring him in for a check up to be sure there isn't a physical problem. Get some blood work done, a senior panel it's called, to check his organ function (liver and kidney and thyroid especially)

In addition, when you see him working on a spot, distract him with lovings, groomings and play time.

What's your kitty's name?

Welcome, and please keep us posted.
