My Mood: | Lima and his Knee
It seems that Liam has been diagnosed with Luxating Patella(floating kneecap). He had strained his left leg two weeks ago(he and Darby play hard) and our vet put him on a Anti-inflamatory with pain killer. Our vet had to do it twice as the first course didn't fix the problem(This med can only be taken four days on then 2 days off and he can't take anymore now) but after the second time he was himself again. Wednesday I had been out with my daughter and grandaughter and when I returned he was limping again but it was the other leg giving trouble. The vet had been excellant about calling to see how he was and when I told her the new issue she asked us to bring Liam in for xrays. Well we didn't have to get the xrays at all but she did find the floating kneecap. He's been given a new food from Royal Canin that you can only get from the vets but contains stuff for joint health but all three cats can eat. She said that this should help as it will lubricate the joint and with him still being young it should go away on its own but if not when he's older he may require knee surgery to put in pins which is very costly. (Rough estimate is $2000.00 ) Has anyone else had a cat diagnosed with this and any suggestions what I could get over the counter to help. I would appreciate any advice with this situation.

Oh MJ, I'm sorry to hear this I haven't got any useful advice to offer you but just wanted to reply anyway. Poor little Liam going through this at such a young age (and for you as well) - you don't expect such things when they're babies do you.
I hope that someone can help with this...

Thanks for that. I wasn't expecting this at all when he had origninally pulled a muscle in his other leg and it had gotten better. The other morning he was perfectly fine and was able to get around but when I returned in the afternoon he was limping again and then I thought Wait a minute this is the other side. Apparently he isn't in pain which I'm thankful for and he does try to play with Darby who is so crazy.

Sorry I haven't any advice either but I just wanted to say that I'm sorry to hear about Liam's knee injury. Poor little kitten, please give him a cuddle from me. I hope someone else here can help.

Thank you Hallan and within the last day and half he isn't limping as much and is more playful with his brother. They go to vet's on Friday for their final series of vaccines and so I am going to ask about a product i saw in Petsmart which is in a tube like toothpaste and you squeeze it onto their paw which they lick off. Its has some joint support stuff in it but with this special diet they are on I don't want to overload. I also have a step niece that has a business which does animal healing using Reiki. I've seen her in action and know that she has a gift. Her sisters dog had the same thing as Liam and it worked great on him. Will keep you posted.

It is very troubling as my first thing was OMG he must be in a lot of pain but what I've read there isn't pain until its chronic if it comes to that.

Maya..... Liam isn't having surgery as he is too young and still growing and they say that most times this corrects itself as he gets older and is also eating a new food by Royal Canin that I can only get from the Vets which is for joint care. Nice thing is is that all three cats are eating the same food. He isn't limping as much as before unless he is tired or if he and Darby have been running around like banshee's like they do sometimes. Today there isn't any limping and while at the vets last Friday for their final shots the vet was happy with it as she couldn't feel the crunching like she had the week before. |
