Default holidays

I am going home to my parents house for Thanksgiving and Christmas and am taking my Sampson with me. Dad said to bring him so I am. He has never been out of the house since I got him last Feb. except a couple of blocks to the vet. Does anybody have any thoughts on things to consider when doing this?? It is a 3 hr trip and will be going over Thurs. morning and coming back Sun. morning..

thanks

Hi Voldo37. We travel frequently with cats, going to cat shows mostly. We use carriers that are large enough for the cat to stand in. You should include a litter box and something comfortable, like a bed or towel or pad of some sort, to allow them to lie down comfortably. I don't know what type of car vehicle you have. If it's a car, I would recommend placing the carrier on the back seat on the passenger side or towards the middle. This will allow you to look and make sure the cat is doing well, without having to stop to check it out. The litter box is a must, even for just a 3-hour trip. Don't put water in the cage. The cat will most likely spill it, or it will dump on a curve or a turn. You can give the cat a small bit of dry food in a dish, but it's liable to get spilled too.

It's unsafe for the carrier to be in the front seat due to the air bag. It's also a pretty poor idea, from a safety standpoint, to let the cat loose. They wander all over and could get under your feet while you're driving.

The cat will probably meow during the trip. They are stressed, but usually will survive with no lasting problems.

Good luck and enjoy the holidays.

Since it's just a 3 hour trip, I think your cat will be fine as long as it's in its transportation cage with a little water. I went on a trip that took about that time and my cat did just fine, even though she originally hates leaving our home. We went on trains and a bus.

You should probably take the advice on not putting your cat in the front seat.
