Default Sasha - I don't know what to do..

Sasha hates being groomed with a passion. Since I got her at 13 weeks old I have always tried to groom her to get her used to it. I have an array of combs, brushes and a mat splitter - but whenever I try to give her a good going over she howls, crys and hisses at me. She only likes her head and neck being touched

Consequently she has a number of mats that I just can't get rid of. I've even tried snipping them out with scissors when she is dozing but she still gets distressed.

Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with a petulant princess

I have exactly the same problem with Dylan, Heidi.

I give her a snipping with the scissors when she is really relaxed on my bed.
I am really careful.
It takes a few days at a time, but I get there in the end. xxxxx

It's good to know I'm not alone Che! I guess I'll just have to persevere like you. To be honest I think a lot of the fuss she makes is just "handbags" - but I hate the thought of distressing her

I've been thinking of you since you wrote this, Heidi. It sounds like you are doing everything right. She just knows what she doesn't like! Sometimes Leo will get matted under his neck, armpits or tail.

I know, I know, I've written pages on keeping up with combing so that doesn't happen! But, with a busy young family and 4 other pets, well it's hard to comb him daily.

I'm lucky though. Leo is in total heaven just as long as he's being touched. He'll take any form of affection. That said, he hates his mats to be addressed as much as Sasha does. I don't try to comb them out. It just hurts. I cut them when he's snoozing by the fire or just napping somewhere. Like Che, sometimes it takes a few days just to get one.

I know how hard it is with that fur. It has a unique texture. Very soft and fluffy underneath, but it mats like nobody's business!

Maybe some tuna juice or some special treat? Good luck!!!

Hi Heidi,
My sister is having the same problem with her cat Jasper, and the vet told her about a special cat food for long haired cats that once given to them regularly will help make the hair more manageable. She started it about 3 weeks ago and it appears to be helping, mind you he still does not like to be brushed but it is getting easier.
They most likely don't have the same brand in the U.K. but I am sure they would have a similar product. The name is Royal Canin Skin/Hair Care 30 Formula Cat Food

Thank you Carrie and Erin, it's always good to know that it's not just me!

Carrie - as you also use scissors to snip the mats out like Che then I know that it's ok to do! Like you said it must hurt to try and yank them out so I will not do that, it must make it worse for her.

Erin - thanks for the tip on the food I've had a look online and my local Pets at Home stock this type of Royal Canin (it's the brand of dry food that I already feed them), it's called number 33 over here though. As Pixie is also a long haired cat it won't do her any harm either, I'll get some next time I stock up!

Yes sweetie you are not alone. I get the same problem with Dylans boys Bolan + Toto too.
But they don't mind me snipping away at their matts.

Dylan on the other hand is quite a little feisty madam. LOL.

Sometimes when I think she's all peaceful and sleepy, I put my reading glasses on and grab the scissors quietly. Just as I'm going to snip, she stirs, sees I've got my glasses on and she hisses at me.
She doesn't like me with glasses on at all. LOL. xxxxx

Heehee, that's really funny Che, she hates your glasses and knows your intentions
