Default Help!! My cat is hissing and spitting at her 5 week old babies!

Hi Everyone.
I'm new to the forum and in need of advice.
My cat is hissing and spitting at her 5 week old kittens. She also seems to be attacking them when they try to feed.
We had to take over some of the feeding about a week ago because she just isn't very interested in them. She will only feed them when she feels like it, which isn't very often.
All the babies are eating the food we put down and are using the litter tray.
Should I keep mum away from them now that she is getting aggressive or is this natural?
Thanks all.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

The first thing to do is to take the mama cat to the vet. She may have an illness, (perhaps a milk fever and it hurts her to be nursed on) that is causing her to act this way.

She may also be going into heat again, which is very bad news. Do not let her outside at all, until she has been spayed.

Once she has been treated for illness and/or deemed healthy please get her spayed.

Continue to hand rear the babies and have them spayed and neutered when they are old enough and before they go to their new homes.

hi there, i remember my vet saying that mum cats will start swatting their kitten around 5 weeks as they are trying to encourage weaning and independance, dont know if this is your situation, but it may be natural behaviour but would see the vet anyway, jan
