When In Rome is on a distinguished road
Default Our new cat is not settling

Hello and thank you for accepting us as forum members.

We have a problem because we have taken on a beautiful 5-year old tortoiseshell cat which has had to be separated from her owner who has had to return to her native Poland to care for her sick mother.

Since yesterday Lady has been unsettled and occasionally aggressive although by nature she is quite loving and obviously missing her owner but of today's situation we are not sure what to do next.

Firstly, here is a photo of Lady.

I think she may be depressed? She has not touched any food today or taken any water. She is sat on a washbag in the bathroom where she has been since 11am today.

Several people have looked at her, tried to encourage her but she is ignoring everyone and continues to lie there with the bathroom light on and she has been in the same position in the bathroom for seven hours now?

I felt her nose which seems normal, not dry or warm so I think she is healthy, just worried about the non-interest now and the fact that she has not eaten or drank anything.

You don't say how log Lady has been with you. Only just today?

Please stop people from continually looking at her. Stop that right now.

Lady has just lost everything she has ever known. Her home is gone, her person is gone. She cannot comprehend what has happened to her. Of course she is depressed and probably terrified.

Give Lady one room. Make sure it has a window (closed) and that she can look out of it.

Make sure the room is safe for her. Does she have anything familiar to her, a bed, or blanket from her old life?

Give her a box turned on it's side, and put the bed or blanket in that.

More in the next post.

Only one person should take care of Lady at first. That person should go in and give her her food, clean her litter box, then sit quietly on the floor for a little while, a few times a day.

Let Lady come to you. Don't try to drag her out if she is hiding, don't try to pick her up, don't stare at her.

Just sit quietly and talk to her, tell her about yourself and why she will love her new home once she gets over grieving and settles in. Because she WILL grieve once she realizes her person is not coming back, ever.

The strange smells will upset her,t hat is why I really really hope you have something familiar for her.

After a few days, put in another box on it's side (flap hanging down) this time lined with something that smells like you. This wil help her start to bond with you.

Let her adjust at her own pace.

Has she eaten anything yet? Is the food the same food she is used to? What kind of food is it?

If she hasn't eaten you might want to try something very smelly and irresistible.

Yesterday I left a reply and it said "your post will now wait to be approved by a moderator" - so where is it?

That happens sometimes with new posters. You might have noticed this forum is not very busy. It has a lot of annoying quirks like that. It crashes often, too.

The post will probably never reappear you will have to rewrite it.

How is Lady doing now? How long has she been with you?
