Tobacco can be very dangerous to cats and the nicotine can be toxic. Signs vary dependent on the amount of the cigarette ingested, the nicotine content and the size of the cat. In severe cases, death is possible from ingestion. I would encourage your friend to keep her purse closed when she is visiting and keep all tobacco products out of reach of your cat. Second hand smoke can also cause problems in our cats and some studies and anecdotal evidence have linked it to asthma and even possibly certain types of cancer.
