I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your cat. Garlic can cause hemolytic anemia in cats by making their red blood cells more fragile but I would not have expected things to go so quickly. Potatoes can also cause some stomach upset due to a compound called solanine that is under the skin when it turns green due to light exposure but these signs are usually easily treated. From what you describe, I would find it unusual that the garlic or potato was the cause of his death but I never say never. Unfortunately, we may not have an answer in this case.
