In most cases, these mites are species specific but it can be passed on to your cat, especially if he is in close contact with you. If he does become infected it will usually resolve on its own if you are treated. Nonetheless, it would not hurt to have him treated as well just to be safe. Many of the prescription topical flea preventatives also can treat mites - just ask your veterinarian what he or she feels is best for your cat.
