Unhappy Discipline

I have a male cat who I saved from the shelter at age 3, he's not 9, and he's gotten agressive. I got him a little friend about a year ago, and that has helped A LOT, but he still bites sometimes (I have the scars to prove it!). I've tried the water bottle (didn't help), I've tried throwing the newspaper (didn't help), and now my mother-in-law says to smack him on the head! I dont want to hit my baby, but if it's all I can do to not get bitten I will (I guess)! He doesn't bite my husband, only me & my best friend (who is a guy).

What's the best way to deal?

Wow Im lucky I havent had this problem. My mum always told me just to tap them on the nose when they misbehave. Not hard but enough to let them know you are serious.

I have always heard of using a water bottle or tapping them on the nose with a newspaper to correct them. For maybe about a year, our cat PJ will try to bite if you try and move her off the couch or pick her up at a time when she does not want to be picked up. When that happens, I usual just pick her up and banish to the floor. It doesn't usually work though. She still tries to bite sometimes.

When he gets this way he'll just hide behind things & sulk (not play, SULK) until I walk by & then he'll latch into my leg. He's gotten a lot better since we got the little girl, but the problem has never REALLY gone away. *sigh*
