Default Spring Is In The Air - Darn It

OK here's something I've never had to deal with before, and I sure could use some advice. It's a little comical yet not really. The little girl of the Cat Ranch, Nova, is way in heat, and it seems to be intensifying. I mean she's gone loco with lust. As she's only about 8 months old she surely doesn't know what's going on and is driving me crazy with anxiety. I haven't had her spayed yet because she's been sick and the vet and I wanted to get her well before subjecting her immune system to the effects of such invasive surgery. She walks around meowing forlornly, she climbs on me writhing her tiny body around, isn't interested in food, and the only thing that soothes her is intense head rubbing. I can't decide if she's in agony or ecstasy. I'm sure not going to let her quench her desires with some nasty old tom. Is there anything like a "cure" besides time, maybe an herbal remedy?

Not weird at all, Wendywenpet. I had a friend in Seattle some years back who bred Abbys and he used to do something similar when he wanted to give one of his ladies a break from kittening, only he used a thick glass rod. I may have to resort to it, but I guess I'm just put off by the idea a little. Oh well, the things we do for love LOL.

I too am being driven crazy - my tom who's been neutered is being terrorised by a floosie in heat. She has been weeing on my carpets and she is getting really nasty because she's not getting what she wants. I feel sorry for her but at the same time I feel really sorry for us not being able to sleep after 4am and having to clean the carpet with vinegar each night.

Is there someone out there who can pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaaase heeeeeeelp.

Jaspur, please excuse the laughter. It's not because of your predicament, which isn't funny. It's just that I recognize myself in it. Fortunately, my little girl Nova has quieted down. However, if you've read the posts above, you should "get the idea." It's a bit weird, but professional breeders do it. I shouldn't have to spell it out. Ask your vet for advice, or you need to obtain a rod of some kind that can be sanitized - a glass stirring rod from a chemistry supply, for instance, one that's not likely to break (thick). Once your sweet girl is out of heat you might want to consider having her spayed unless you intend to breed her. Good luck.

The "artificial satisfation" method I described above is, of course, temporary only, and not very savory to most of us, so I went online to do some deeper esearch:
Fellow feline lovers, I've just come offline from researching whatever I could find about female cat estrus. As I suspected already, there isn't really any safe method of controlling female "heat" other then spaying. There are hormone treatments that suppress the estrus cycle, but they are very dangerous - they can lead to cancer! These treatments are not available in the USA, but are in some other countries. Do not try them, please. Just get little Miss Fluffy "fixed." A female cat can go into estrus anywhere from 5 to 9 months of age (average 6 months). Estrus can last from about 4 to 20 days, depending on the individual cat, then take a break. She will then go into estrus again after about 10 to 20 days. She can go into estrus over and over again, if she doesn't get pregnant, ALL YEAR LONG (unlike dogs, it says here). The female cat in love can be a pest, as some of you know - as do I, in fact. Nova was climbing all over me, squirming around, calling pleadingly, presenting herself, I guess because I have testosterone. Fortunately, she never urinated inappropriately. She seems to have gone out of estrus for now, and I fully intend to have her spayed ASAP; but because of her sinus problems this has to wait. I recently talked to her vet about her sinus problems, which have not been cured. It's going to cost me around $200.00 to have her anesthetized and her sinuses flushed to see if there's a foreign body in there causing irritation. Or she may have polyps or a cleft palate. A culture may have to be performed to check for disease. There are endoscopes small enough for cats that can be used to look up in the sinuses, but the procedure costs anywhere from $800.00 to $1,500.00 by a specialist. YIKES! Anyway, I guess there really is only one certain cure for the "female feline blues" - spaying. From what I read, most vets will spay a cat while she is in heat and it should be quite safe to do so. In the long run, everybody will be happier and healthier and there will be fewer unwanted kittens being euthanized (hundreds of thousands a year). Take it from a convert who used to be against it. My cats are all better off for being spayed and neutered.
