Default After cat sitting, 2 of our 4 cats fighting really bad, what to do?

We were cat sitting for a couple days. The cat hid the whole time and our cats (we have 4 males, they always get along!) never saw her. After she left, our one cat was looking around where she was. Another one of our cats, came up behind him and spooked him and a huge fight broke out. And I mean huge. We had to separate them. We keep trying to reintroduce them but we can't even get them remotely close without them growling and hissing and a huge fight ensuing. This all started yesterday morning. And the oddest thing, they don't care about our other 2 cats at all. They are fine with them. The 2 that are fighting are brothers we have had for 6 years, since they were kittens. Nothing like this has ever happened before. Please help! We have no idea what to do.

Keep them separated to start. Exchange them from the room every other day. Meaning, keep one cat in one room and the other roaming the house. The next day, put the other cat in the room, and let the one who was secluded roam the house. Do this for a week.

Clean the area where the stranger (to them) cat was hiding. I would completely get rid of the litter box the stranger cat used, and put a brand new one in it's place.

You may need to get some feliway plug in diffusers, but you can try the "Vanilla Trick" first.

Put a dot of cooking vanilla (real vanilla not perfume) on the chin and root of tail of all the cats, even the ones who aren't involved. Put some around the stranger-cat's area too. This makes all the cats smell the same. Cats function primarily by sense of smell so if they all smell the same, they are less likely to feel territorial and fight.

After a few days of using the vanilla stop keeping them separated and see how they do.

Feliway plug in diffuser helps with territorial feelings but hopefully you won't have to go to that.
