Default Dental problems

Cats, like other creatures have teeth and they need to be cared for. Have you ever heard of a cat with an overbite? Really! I read about this in MyLot. This person's cat, he says, has developed an overbite! Reading on further it sounds like maybe it's something he suddenly encountered in his daily life...maybe a fight, maybe he did something else to injure himself. I suppose it could be some sort of health problem because they also said he had a swollen mouth and lots of redness. I was wondering if he got something in his mouth like a thorn or porcupine needles. I had a dog that bit a porcupine once. There were dozens of tiny quills you could hardly see in his tongue. I can't imagine a cat biting a porcupine but maybe some sort of plant with thorns. What do you guys thing?

I also knew a dog that got tangled with porcupines and not just one time!! He had big puss like things in his mouth and many trips to the vet to drain them. He was a big husky/wolf breed of dog.

Could be possibly a poisonous plant... or did this cat drink something that could have been poisonous? I knew our neighbour's blonde labradour drank some antifreeze and died within a day. Sad to say!

Too bad our pets get into something that they don't know about and leads to tragedy.

Well..that's sad. My huess would probably be some sort of a thorny or poisonous plant. Did they take the cat to a vet. I think they should do that immediately.
I had heard of this in dogs but hadn't really heard of cats facing this problem.

Like I mentionned, this was a post in MyLot, so I don't know if the guy took his cat to the vet or not. I sure hope everything turned out ok. I was looking closely at one of my cats. He doesn't have an overbite, but he does appear to have some sort of dental abnormality. His right bottom tooth comes out over his upper lip. He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable or in pain. Another thing this particular cat does is sometimes just sitting there with his tongue hanging out, but his mouth closed. I wonder if this could be related to the tooth problem. Anyway, this cat has belonged to my husband for a long time. He says it's always been like that and the vet never seemed concerned as long as the cat was comfortable.

I saw on the news a while ago where a dentist put two gold crowns on his cat's underbite. They looked really funny. The dentist was worried the teeth would break off or become a problem.

This little tooth sticking out when my cat closes his mouth doesn't seem to be loose or anything. It's really quite sturdy. I don't remember seeing it, say, six months ago. It doesn't seem to pain him, and he certainly isn't losing any weight so it must not be bothering his eating. The time it bothers him is only when I am studying it, so I guess I will just leave it alone unless it starts to look like it's making him uncomfortable.

This cat had a major underbite. Here is a link to the picture:

Dentist Puts Gold Teeth on Pet Cat

Like you said, unless he is in pain or it is interferring with him eating, then I would just let it go. Just keep an eye on him.

Default Going too far

This is the first time, Christine, that I have heard of someone doing that extent of dental work on a cat. It seems to me that people go farther and farther with the spoiling of their cats, treating them like people, and spending ridiculous money on them. When my mom was a girl, her dad would throw any dead barn cats on the manure pile. Now I am reading about people who buy caskets and urns and have cremations or burials with full ceremonies. Sorry...I don't go for this...I love my cats but I am still an old farmers granddaughter and an animal is an animal.

I agree, witty, people do take their spoil their pets to much. Like some people recommending special foods for your cats and dogs and to don't feed them from the table. My mom told me when she was a girl, they couldn't afford to buy their cats and dogs food from the store, all they had was scraps and milk from the cows. I do spoil my cats, but I don't go overboard liking buying them high priced collars, etc. They are just spoiled with love and attention.

I agree too, there's nothing wrong with repairing the teeth of your cat but putting a gold tooth is too much for me. But then, it's their choice if they want to do it with their own cats. If they're happy doing it, then so be it. As for me, I wouldn't go that far.
