I warm the refrigerated food by running hot water over the dish, then leave a small amount of hot water in the dish (about a teaspoon) then put the cold food in the dish (about a tablespoon full). Mix the food thoroughly with the water, the water and the hot dish itself will warm the food. Takes a couple of extra minutes.

In fact I warm ALL meals this way for my cats, not just the cold food from the fridge..

test the temp of warmed food regardless of method, by touching the back of your knuckle to it. If it feels barely warm to your skin it's fine.

Is not recommended to warm the canned food up. Best is to take it out of the frigde 2 or 3 hours before you serve it. It should be written in the can
not to warm it up.

Cool Dry or wet ?

Most of the time, my cats will love canned food better than dry food. They love treats as well. But I train them to have both (I don't want to spoil their appetite). But I agree, that scheduled meals is a better solution to control their diet.
