Default How to tell if your cat is deaf

I have a cat who is nearly 5 years old. We have never heard her meow and when you talk to her it's as if she doesn't hear us. You can say her name and she never even turns her head. We have 2 other cats and one is very vocal. I figured when we got him 2 years ago, Lucky would learn to talk. Or other cat doesn't say a lot either but she does a lot of hissing at our grandpuppy is around. Lucky will hiss a little at him but she never says a peep. She's a good cat, but does not like to be held. She can come and get under the covers with us to sleep and she will play with Frankie the vocal one of the three. They chase each other back and forth through the house. She can get shut in somewhere and never meow to let you know she's there. One time she got shut in the kitchen cabinet and was there for 5 hours while we searched the house looking for her. We feared she slipped out the door. Could she be deaf?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Some cats just aren't very talky.

What does your vet say about Lucky's hearing?

Go up behind her and clap your hands together, or make some other sharp noise. If her ears respond she heard. She just chooses not to acknowledge!

Talking

Hi & welcome!

Maybe yes, maybe not... You can try with this: when she's near you & she cannot see you, shake your hands & see what happens... If no reaction, she may be deaf. What's her colour? It is said that white cats have a tendency to deafness.

Default Deafness

Thank you for the replies. I will try these and see what I come up with. She is a long haired black cat. She also is one with extra toes on her feet. I can't think of what you call them.

Smile Your 5 year old girl

I think Acer is right. Did you do the test ? Did she respond ? I hope she is alright, just make sure she is not shut in anywhere.

Yes, I tried the test and she did turn around and look at me, so her hearing must be ok. But just can't figure out why she does not ever meow. Our other cats will be looking our the window and see birds and make those little chattering noises and she just looks out and doesn't do that either.

Cool Easy to tell

Congrats your kitty's hearing is normal. She is just a passive cool cat who doesn't like to talk. Accept her as she is, it is her personality. Some cats are really vocal, like my Princess Tiger, she is very talkative, will respond to me when I talk to her, even when I talk to her sister and brother, she would respond on their behalf, which is funny !

Ah, but one must never as "why" a Cat does (or doesn't do) anything. We are here to Serve without questioning.

I agree with Irene, it's just who she is!
