Unhappy my cat is loosing fur

I don't know what's wrong with my kitty... all i know is she has lost a lot of fur and scratches herself a lot only on the lower half of her body. We were told that it could be flea's, allergies to food and we have changed her diet and we check her for fleas on a regular basis. Has anyone seen this before and been able to treat it. The cat does get better and then she will get bad again. this is the worst I have seen it. When we lived in another location she never had this problem after we moved 4 years ago then she started to have problem. The vet told us that it was most likely stress. Don't know...

Default Fur loss

Welcome to the forum. Poor little kitty. What is her name ?
If your house is flea free and she is an indoor cat, I would rule out flea problem. Yet, it could be anything from allergy (food, fabrics....) to stress or other skin irritations. As per your description, I would think that it could be stress. House moving or environmental changes can be stressful for cats. Cats become upset for various reasons. Since your cat can't directly tell you she's upset over certain things, she may develop inappropriate behavior. Cats like people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, may develop strange behavior such as pulling their hair out for non- allergy reasons, biting themselves repeatedly in one spot, or related nipple, flank, or paw sucking....

Please take her to the vet IMMEDIATELY to rule out her symptoms. She has been suffering quite badly. Stress can easily trigger kidney disease. So please don't neglect this "severe" case. Please keep us updated after the vet visit.
My prayer goes to your little one.

Unhappy

Hi & welcome!

Hardly to say... Maybe it's fleas, allergies or stress but, why don't to take her to a specialist?
My Meshee suffers from something like this, not so serious like yours & still we didn't find the reason. You can see in the below pic that there is a lack of fur in her leg:

Or could always get a second opinion and take her to another vet - it does look quite nasty, you and she must be distressed about it

Thank you all for your replies. Her name is Luna and she seems to be well adjusted and not having any problems other than the fur loss and scratching. The vet really does not seem to know what is causeing this. I think we are going to change the flea medication and see if that helps.

Hi catkiki, I think Luna's problem is more stress problem than flea problem... coz if it is flea problem, then human will also be affected. If you or the vet don't see any flea, then, we need to rule out this problem and think about other possibilities. Hope your baby Luna will soon be free from this suffering.

My now-gone Pochee suffered from something similar. He was scratching constantly I had hair loss. After several attemps, the skin specialist discovered that it was a lack of hormones. You can suggest this option to your vet.

Yep, he must check this possibility, too!

Good idea. Some vets are more qualified than others and care more for pets than others.
