Default Vet's Exam of your pet

Hi everyone:

I am new to this site. What led me to this site was searching for answers and support for my cat, Elphie (13 yo). Before I begin, please make sure your vet does a thorough oral exam when checking out your pet. Not just lifting open the mouth and looking at the gums and then telling you your pet needs a cleaning. A proper exam includes looking at the roof of the mouth and under the tongue with a dental mirror. I have yet to see any of the vets I've been to do this. Funny thing was I read this on a poster in the vets exam room after picking my cat up from having 2/3 of her tongue amputated due to a tumor under her tongue. She had been losing weight and her hair was falling out. $1200.00 and every test to rule out allergies and several expensive brands of vet only hypoallergenic foods, she still wasn't eating. While bathing her one night, I looked into her mouth and thought that her tooth might be cutting into her gum. took her back to the vet and asked them to pull her tooth if that was the problem. They called me 4 hours later and told me she had cancer and a huge mass under her tongue. What do I want to do, she probably wouldn't survive the surgery and the prognosis looks bad. In shock, I said do what you need to do to save her. It's been 10 days post-op. We are feeding through a syringe high calorie food and a little bit of water. She is still alive.

Anyone out there been through a similar situation? If so, please share your story.
