Some bon mots of history:
I admire Elizabeth Tudor (aka Queen Elizabeth I of England) for her intelligence and wiles in the face of a powerful and aggressive Spanish Empire and and a threatening France, at a time when males were so completely dominant. She outsmarted them all and brought about the union of England and Scotland without bloodshed - something previous monarchs had failed to do. I forgive her for one thing: she disliked cats.
The prophet Mohammed, founder of the Muslim religion, was reputed to have loved cats so much that one time when one of his kitties fell asleep on the sleeve of his robe he had someone cut the sleeve off rather than disturb the napping cat.
Inquiring minds want to know!

Our Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI doesn't like cats---he ADORES them! It's a very big thing for him. He keeps several cats in his former apartment and they are fed several times daily by his secretary. For some reason, animals are not allowed in the vatican itself...so they remain in his former apartment, which is across the piazza and which has basically become a home for orphan cats! He also has a cat at home in Germany in his small cottage where his brother, Msgr. Ratzinger lives.

St. Gregory the Great, Pope of Rome also adored cats. When he reposed it was the one possession he had, his cat. He used to share much time daily with his cat and stroke and pet it while he prayed his breviary each day.

St. Martin de Porres, founded the first known shelter and hospital for abandoned cats and dogs in Lima, Peru in the 15th century. He loved animals and was even known to feed rats and mice, saying: "Poor little things have no one to feed them...and they were created by God too and saved in the Ark...should we not care also for them?"

St. Francis of Assisi is of course, well known for his love of animals...and most of the Saints had a great love of animals...seeing them as revealing to us some of the very qualities of the Creator.
