Default Unanswered: Post-Cast question

Hi everyone,

Well my cat is only about 5 months old and she ended up breaking her leg about 4 weeks ago. We were told after 4 weeks she should be able to get it off. Well she has been confined in a large dog crate with occasional supervised exercise Today *her 4 week mark* she somehow managed to get her cast off so we took the rest of it off but the vet was closed at this time. She is walking on it but she is limping I am guessing because she is not used to it. She isn't acting like it is bothering her or that she is in pain. Because of the cast her leg is very skinny and boney looking compared to the other and little fur on it. What are normal behaviors and visuals of the leg after a cast does come off?

Thanks! I just dont want to spend 200 dollars if she is fine.

The leg will be weak from lack of use, the muscles have atrophied. I've never had an animal in a cast (knock on wood!!) so I have no idea what comes next. Four weeks doesn't seem very long! Hopefully, someone else will know more!

Yeah, the vet said that cats heal faster than dogs, and kittens heal even faster than cats. I am trying to go from when I broke my wrist and how different things were and assume it is the same as the cat to an extent.

Hello and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear about your kitten's broken leg. What happened? Perhaps your experience might save someone else from the same type of accident.

A broken wrist on a human isn't at all the same as a broken leg on a cat.

Please take your cat in for her follow up vet visit. Why would it cost $200? Most vets charge minimal fee for a follow up on the same injury, if they charge anything.

Even if it did cost $200, better to know now if she is healing properly than to wait until there is so much damage it will cost thousands to fix.

Totally agree with acerlt...please take kitty back to the vet.

If there is an additional fee, you could explain your circumstances and see if the vet could perhaps offer a discounted fee...especially since your kitty has done most of the work of removing the cast!

Good luck...I totally respect that sometimes these unexpected vet costs can be difficult...but in the long run, it's just part of the price of being lucky to be guardian to a feline!

Let us know how things turn out...

Until next time...Annie
