Unhappy Unanswered: My kitty had a huge cut (stitches) Now has a 106 fever!

So I noticed on Sunday that my cat had a huge incision. I took her to the vet they sewed it up and put a drainage tube in her. I took her today for a checkup and they said she had a 106 fever. They gave her an antibiotic shot since it was hard to pill her called (Convenia) that lasts 7-14 days. She now is a bit lethargic and doesn't want to drink or eat. I syringe fed her with water and wet food a couple times. Should I be worried? The vet said if she is still not eating or drinking I should bring her back tomorrow.

Lethargy and loss of appetite is a common side effect of convenia. I hate that shot. The medicine is effective for two weeks, but stays in the system for two months, so if there is a bad reaction, there is nothing that can be done but wait it out and hope the cat survives.

Syringing water and food is good, to keep your kitty going until you can get her back to the vet in the morning, as long as she isn't fighting you. The danger of course is aspiration (breathing liquid into the lungs) but it sounds like you know what you are doing.

Keep her warm, keep her hydrated, keep syringing water and the wet food gruel every hour or so, however much she will tolerate. If she takes a turn for the worse, get her to the ER vet, or call the on call vet right away. Otherwise bring her in first thing tomorrow morning.

All paws crossed for her.

Hi,

Firstly check you cats’ temperature by using ediatric rectal digital thermometer. If the temperature is still 106 you must take her to veterinarian immediately as this indicates that there is something seriously wrong with your cat.
