Default chronic kidney failure

Our cat Baltimore got sick and went to the vet where he was diagnosed with kidney failure. Brought him back home and he is a different cat, very lethargic and doesn't move around much.Has poor diagnosis and was told there was no recovery whatsoever from this affliction. He eats but most of the time sits in a trance and waits.
Is he in pain, should I put him down?
really a lot of doubt on if I am treating the cat or just keeping the status quo so I wont have to do the deed. Starting to look like he needs to be put down since the quality of life is at a bare minimum and he is totally non-participatory (doesn't even go downstairs anymore.

appreciate any articles or papers put out on what the end game is here, vey lost and need some assistance
