Default I just got a cat from the Riverside Animal Shelter and she will not eat or...

...drink anything, what do I do? My new cat is about 3 yrs old, I already have two cats that I have had for about 2yrs. My new cat will not come out from under the bed. I have put food under the bed and water. She doesn't touch any of it. What do I do?

My cat did the same thing when we first moved. He stayed under the bed not moving for hours! At night he finally snuck out and explored then was fine. Just give her some time and make sure she's separted from the other cats until she gets comfortable with her new surroundings.

I think it is just scared there is no telling what kind of environment it was in before the shelter plus the fact it is in a whole new environment. Give it time to itself to realize you pose no threat to it and it will slowly warm up to your home. Just leave food and water available and speak gently to it from a distance =)

Just leave her be and make sure she has a litter box. I have two adults and two kittens, although none are related. When I first brought "Patches" home, I shut "Callie" and "Midnight" up in our spare bedroom and let "Patches" get the lay of the house. After that, I reversed things and put Patches in the spare bedroom with access to food, water and litter box. It didn't take long before "Callie" (the oldest and first arrival to our house) to become curious about her and she was sticking her paw under the door to investigate. "Midnight" was a little trickier because she's a bit "protective" of "her" house. She *still* doesn't like the two kittens but she's learning to tolerate them. So, my advice is not to worry, your new cat will get over it. She has to eat *sometime* after all, and she is most likely going to sneak out and do it when no one is looking. I hope this helps!! BTW all four of my "girls" are rescue cats.

Your cat is probally scared of something but what you should do is you should leave your cat under the bed and leave the food and water under the bed and leave her alone under the bed and she MIGHT come out..

The cat is probably scared and also is probably scared of the other cats because they kind of have their own territories and she or he is probably scared but the cat should get around and come out after maybe say 1 month because my cat did the same and i already had a cat lviving in my house before hope that helps!!

Hi I had the same problem and now she is eating and drinking water.
How long have you had her and do you know ahything about her past?
The cat i got I saved from this family of girls they broke her tail and beat her
up all the time, when i brought her home she never came out when i was around because i am a girl. She would only come out to eat drink or use the liter when my husband was home. It took her almost a week to start to eat again. She started to relize that I was no harm to her and she was still scared of me for about 4 months ater I have had her for about 6 months now and she has come around very good she is like a normal cat now. Anyway what i am trying to say is that, try from a different angle Try have a girl or a child get close to her/him you never know or she could be a picky eater like my one cat all he eats is soft food maybe if you try diffrent thing she/he might come out and eat drink. If that does not work try and put her in a room with nothing for her/him to hide under and try and talk to him/her and see what the out come is there. Thats about all i would try to see if it helps but if you are a male then try a female and see where that goes or the other way around
Best Wishes Patricia kitty-katt

Lightbulb this is important

I realise this case already worked itself out but for anybody reading this...

I just adopted a cat from a shelter who is 3 and she would NOT eat. She had kennel cough which is very common among kennel animals but nontransmittable to humans. If a cat cannot smell it WILL NOT eat. No kidding. It is like pneumonia in people.
I was told to force feed her...I got a syringe and some cat food from the vet which I mixed with warm water and also gave her antibiotics with her food.
I was afraid for her...no one wants to force feed their pet but she remained alive...she didn't eat anything on her own in 2 weeks. I had never met a cat that wouldn't even eat tuna! She was so weak.
Then after Easter, I took an egg yolk and began playing with it and her like a little smelly yellow ball...she went after it...and eventually she began to eat it as it broke apart because she smelled it and it appealed to her hunt instinct.
Ahh, no more force feedings...she eats like a very hungry and healthy little animal and is a wonderful companion...I am so glad she stayed alive...I was told that she would have died if she had not been adopted and force fed...but now she has no health problems after a little extra care.
