Default How do you know its time

Everyone,

When did you know it was time to put your kitty down? I have a 14 year old tabby with diabetes. Lately she's been having bowel and urinary issues and in general not doing well. She's lethagic but attentive and alert. I've been agonizing and crying my eyes out over the last two days. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Oh, Mike, I'm sorry to read your post.

These are the things I look for. Quality of life is, you obviously know, most important.

Does she still take pleasure in her favorite little things? Does she watch the birds out the window, for instance, or does she lie down and sigh and show no interest in anything, staring blankly at a wall or at nothing at all.

Does she stay near you and accept your love and comfort, or does she go off and sleep somewhere alone and dark.

Is she eating on her own, or does she have to be syringe fed, force fed? If not eating on her own, will she at least accept food from your own hands?

Is she having incontinence? (that would be very mortifying for a cat)

Is she in any pain? When I talk about pain I mean more than just physical pain. Physical pain is the first consideration, but cats can suffer emotional pain, too. Does she know where she is, and who you are, or is she lost and confused?

I suggest you sit down with her and look into her loving eyes and have a heart to heart talk with her. Tell her all about how much you love her and how you want to do the right thing for her. Ask her to let you know when she's had enough, and remind her that when she has, you will give her the Final Kindness of all, letting her go, in peace and with dignity.

I believe, with all my heart, that our Bridge Angels will be waiting for us, when it's our time to go to them.

She'll let you know, Mike. And you'll do the right thing and be there with her until the end. I'm truly sorry that you're are coming to this time with her.

Hi Mike, I'm sorry for your kittie
But why to put her to sleep? Is she eating? When she'll deserve to eat
the problem begins. I'm sure she's medicated, isn't she?
If she's lethargic I believe is because her age. You're very lucky, none of my kids survived the age of 12...

Good luck,
