Default My Harley Cat

I have a 9 yr old nutered blk/grey tabbie who was diagonised Nov 2008 with high grade soft cell sarcoma located on his rear end & under the tail near the anus. He had 1st surgery & apart from the collar, healed great. Then in Feb this yr, the tumor started coming back so my vet recommended the Vet Cancer Center for options. Once options were discussed, I let them start him on chemo with a 2nd surgery to follow the next day. All went well, recovery, eating, etc., with chemo every 2 weeks for 5 treatments. On April 9, he was declared 'cancer free!' I had my little boy back & no collars! At his next monthly checkup, the Vet cancer center noticed a little bump, did cytology & boom, the tumor is coming back for the 3rd time. After many tears, sleepless nights, hand feeding him, an antibotic shot, Predinsone 5mg tab being crushed into his food, I am just trying to keep him comfortable. He is still so affectionate despite his ordeal. The tumor is slowly growing & sort of spent a side one which I had to get that "ProCollar" inflatable one to try & keep him from getting to it. Now they are talking about amputating the tail. We won't do that. We won't have anymore chemo or this "Acemannan" treatment they suggest. I will just love him as I always have & take the best care of I can until he gives me the sign he is ready to let go.
As you know, trying to get the $$$$ for this is stressful enough, but not having control over such an aggresive cancer on your beloved pet is so devestating.
Please pray for Harley. I loved to hear from you about your baby(ies). Thanks for listening. Harley jane

Hi, welcome ! Is your name Jane ? It's really heart wrenching to hear what has happened to your baby Harley. He's suffered a lot, and you've done a lot for him as well ! And Harley is such a warrior !
I understand how devastating your situation is. Still hope for the best, no matter how aggressive the tumor is, since he has the experience declared cancer free. Once again, I hope God work a miracle through the vets. I'm praying with you for his miraculous healing. And may God provide all your need.
Any picture of him ?

Smile Thanks for a reply

Hi Irene Jims, yes, my name is Jane. I do have photos of Harley(of course lots) & will upload later. It's so hard but we had a decent day yesterday & so far today, we've been on our regular routine. He does eat some from his bowl, mainly @ night & again this morning. Last night while i'm scouring the internet watching Michael Jackson's brilliant videos, Harley came & laid down on the desk, just purring away. He still wakes me early for our 'bonding time' & just lets me scratch all over his ears & under the collar.
The side tumor I mentioned is now slowly growing into what resembels like one of his balls are growing back. After spending hrs online, researching tons of sites about this sarcoma/treatment, etc., I just can't justify more surgery/chemo. It's so sad that this cancer will win, but in the end, we have had more time together. Once he goes down again, I think he will let me know it's time. One min. I strong & then completly fall apart. Thanks for your prayer for God to give ME what I need - That really means alot!
How do you schedule an euthansia & how do you put him in the carrier to go to the vet do have it done? I mean it's not like a "C" section.
Thank you for understanding. P.S. How do you get the smilies to show on the post?

Good to hear he's still eating. Nutrition helps fight the intruders and strengthen his body. Yes, you're totally right .. I'm also glad that you have had more quality time together, and lives his life to the fullest, so when it's time, you both won't regret it. I understand your position of being unable to justify more surgery/chemo .. and his time seems closer, and he will let you know when he is ready.
As for the euthanasia, here is a link to an article about how you can prepare for that day (the procedure) :
Euthanasia At Our Hospital

You both are still in my prayers.

PS : What smilies ? You got them showed on your posts already.

As for the euthanasia, here an article about how you can prepare for that day (the procedure) :

WHEN IS IT TIME?

The decision regarding the euthanasia of a beloved pet may be the most difficult decision one makes in one’s entire life; obviously, the consequences are irrevocable. Whatever the decision is, it should be one that you can always look back upon and know that the best decision was made and that you would make the same decision over again in the same situation.

So how do you know if it is time? There are several criteria used in evaluating life quality and you should consider them carefully.

Is your pet eating? Basically, quality life involves eating or at least interest in food. An animal that is hungry has vitality that must be considered, though this is not the only consideration.

Is your pet comfortable? The pet should be free of
debilitating pains, cramps, aches or even the psychological pain that comes from the development of incontinence in an animal that has been housebroken its entire life.

Does the pet still enjoy its favorite activities? The elderly pet does not necessarily need to continue chasing balls or jumping after frisbees but he should enjoy sleeping comfortably, favorite resting spots, the company of the owner etc. You know your pet better than any one and only you can truly answer these questions.
Dr. Alice Villalobos, the veterinarian who started Pawspice, a quality of life program for terminal pets, has published a scoring system for life quality called the HHHHHMM scale. The letters stand for: Hurt, Hunger, Hydration, Hygiene, Happiness, Mobility, and More Good Days than Bad. Click here to view the scoring system.

If you are considering euthanasia, discuss the pet’s condition with your veterinarian prior to making a decision or even coming in for an appointment. Every veterinarian has a story or two about the pet that was brought in for euthanasia but turned out to have a relatively simple problem and ultimately achieved a complete recovery.

The mental process of making the euthanasia decision is heart-breaking and you do not want to have to undergo this process twice but, on the other hand, you do not want to euthanize a pet with a treatable disease. Many times people come in for their euthanasia appointment having already made their decision when, in fact, their pet has a reversible problem.

Do not assume your pet’s condition is untreatable.
Call your veterinarian first and discuss the situation
before you are too far into this emotional process to turn back.

Use the medical resources available to you
to get all the facts and options before making this decision.

SHOULD YOU BE PRESENT FOR THE PROCEDURE?

Again, this is a very personal decision. On one hand, you probably do not want your pet to be alone with strangers in its final moments but on the other hand you may not be up to watching your pet’s death. Every owner wants to think of euthanasia as a gentle slipping into death much like falling asleep. In reality, the pet will probably not close its eyes, and there may be a final twitch, gasp, or even urination. Some animal hospitals do not allow pet owners to be present for euthanasia as it may be disturbing to an owner. To help ease this transition between and death, sometimes a tranquilizer is given first thus alleviating some of the above but you should keep in mind that this may not be how you want to remember your pet.

The issue of children being present is also a personal one and the above information should be considered.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

Appropriate forms must be signed in order for the procedure to take place. If the owner is to be present, an intravenous catheter may be placed. This takes a few minutes and is usually done while the owner pays for the procedure and deals with paperwork. The payment transaction is done prior to the procedure so that the owner will not have to tearfully sign checks or credit card slips just following the emotional height of the procedure.

The intravenous catheter serves several purposes. First, the euthanasia solution is painful if administered outside the vein. The catheter insures clean access to the vein, even if the owner is holding the pet. The catheter also allows for a sedative to be administered prior to the euthanasia solution.

After the catheter is placed, the pet re-joins the owner in the exam room. The owner may spend some last time alone with the pet if desired.

The procedure itself is very fast. If a sedative is to be used, it is given first so that the pet is euthanized from a sleeping status. The euthanasia solution, generally dyed a bright color so that it cannot be mistaken for anything else, is delivered and death comes peacefully in a matter of seconds. The owner is allowed to remain with the pet for final private goodbyes. At the end of this time after the last goodbyes and caresses are completed, the owner simply exits the room when ready and the hospital staff takes over.

Let us know in advance if you would like a lock of hair or the collar as a keepsake.

Sorry I tried to put the link but I wan unable to do it, don't know why ? So I just post the article here.

Hi Jane, welcome!

I'm so sorry to hear such bad news. This is exactly what happened to my now-gone Booba. We went on surgery twice but the tumors did multiply
& also were visible in various parts of her little body, specially in her front legs. So, we decided to PTS. She was very miserable, poor baby.
Hoping for a miracle.
Our prays & thoughts coming to your way from the Holy Land.

I know it's heartbreaking but we, owners cannot allow our critters to suffer. And pls don't escape, try to spend every minute with Harley. I also learned this.
