I have a water fountain for my cats and it works out really well, and if they happen to want some water when I'm brushing my teeth I let them drink water running in a thin stream. I had a scare with one of my boys and a uti so the vet reccomended distilled water too, but anything to get them to drink.....The fountain is called a pet fountain.

Both of my felines: a 2 year old Balinese, and a 6 month old Bobtail are free fed...it was what they were used to when we got them, so that is what I kept them on.

I prefer foods that have the most meat products in them and the least amount of corn or wheat in them; after all, my felines are carnivores aren't they? They digest more of the foods that have less preservatives and additives in them as well; I may spend more on the food, but they also eat less, and less comes out in waste as well.

My two get a daily 'swipe' of cod liver oil on their two front paws, as well, to prevent hair balls...they both love it...Lol!

I used to free feed my boys and always use the higher end products, but my one boy had a uti and now I have to feed him a urinary tract health. I wish I could just feed both of them with this food but my vet told me that it will predispose a cat to uti's if you feed the the urinary tract health food, so I've got to feed both of them several times a day because my skinny cat that eats the regular food will not eat much at at time and so I feel like if I feed one I have to feed the other at the same time because I don't want him to feel left out and ever since they were born, they both got everything together. Any suggestions on a better way? The one on the special food is getting fat!!!

We had a cat fountain for the kitties too. The trouble with that was they wanted to play in the water and it would be all over the floor everyday. We finally just had to get a regular bowl to put water in.

Hey Tracie, Try putting your cats back on the food you had them on before, and put some Apple Cider Vinegar in their water; say maybe a capful per 2-3 cups. Most vets won't recommend this little known trick, but it is the build up of urinary calci that causes UTI, and adding something that can control the build up (ie, something acidic, but not harmful) will help control the issue, and also prevent it in your other cat. You can also simply give your other cat vitamin C daily, as that will give him the necassary acid needed to prevent the calci build up. Just a little 'trick' from a goat breeder-yep that's right a goat breeder; we also had a feline who had recurring issues with UTI, and we decided that if it worked on our male goats, who also have issues in the uti department, and need extra acid to prevent urinary calci, we should try it on our cat, and it did, and he hasn't had a problem in 8 years!
