Default Helping new kitty settle in with my doggie

So I just got my first cat and I'm trying to help her settle in with my dog. She had dogs at her last home but it was a bad experience as the dog was a loony and super hyper and would totally torment the little girl. I am just holding my dog in my lap and the kitty is slowly coming out of her shell. Should I just let them meet on their own terms? Earlier, I had the kitty on one side and the dog on the other and they were fine, alert, but neither were overly interested in the other. Kitty just came over to the couch where I'm sitting and then went back into her spot, but she is slowly walking around.

When we introduced our dog to our cats, we had our cats in a separate room, and put a gate across the door. Enough for them to greet each other through the gate. After a week they seemed okay with each other then we let the cats out to wonder the house while keeping the dog next to us downstairs. It's been two weeks that we've had the cats now and everyone gets along great. We just left them on the own, to work out matters on their own terms. We did watch them closely, so if there was any noticeable agitation with the cats, we would either take them out of the room or the dog would go in another room. It's still a work in progress, but they do get along rather nicely now. I'd say to definitely let them work it out, just watch them closely when they are together.

Hi Taylor, it's me again, Irene. I just replied to your previous thread.
Poor little Solo ... sorry she had such a traumatic experience at her previous home, I hope your home will be her permanent loving home. Thank you for taking her in !
Here is a link to articles about how you can help a new kitty settle in a shared house with other kitties (I believe will also apply to your dogs). I believe they will get along well soon, as long as handled properly. Wish you, Solo and your dogs good luck !
