Default Lame excuses for rehoming your cat

My boy friend/ girlfriend doesn't like her.

your cat was there first. anyone who insists you choose between your cat and them is not worth your time

I'm suddenly allergic

take a pill, get a shot

My boy friend/girl friend is allergic

see above

We got a dog.

So what? teach them to live together, the cat was there first

We got a kitten and the older cat doesn't like the kitten so we want to get rid of the older cat

teach them to live together

She sheds too much.

feed her high quality food and brush her daily

He doesn't match the new furniture.

!@#$%^&*()+!

She's sick and I don't want to take care of her anymore.

So she's loved and welcome until she becomes a problem? Euthanization is better than rehoming an elderly sick cat.

He's old and misses the litter box.

Clean up after him or see above

She scratches the furniture.

Give her her own furniture and teach her to use it.

He's not a cute kitten anymore.

So what? He'll outgrow the teenage stage too, and with love and attention from you he will become a wonderful loving companion to brighten even your darkest hour

She keeps getting pregnant.

Spay her

He meows too much.

Some cats are just talkers. Or he needs more attention from you. Play with him at set times every day. get another cat for his company

She was just a stray we took in (1, 5, 10 years ago?)

When you take in a stray, she is no longer a stray, she is your responsibility

I'm not home enough

get another cat, so he has company, hire a pet sitter to come in once or twice a day to attend them

We're having a baby

So what? My mother had cats before kids, and we all, cats and kids, were raised fine.

We're moving

Take your pets with you. You are their family, they rely on you to care for them and keep them safe and healthy and home.

We're moving into a new apartment that doesn't allow pets

find housing that allows pets.

Pets take work and commitment. And they are for life. Don't get a pet unless you are willing and ready to cope with whatever comes up.

Cats form deep emotional bonds with their humans. rehoming them is extremely traumatic for them. They grieve and wonder what happened to their beloved person. I don't know how anyone could bear to do it, under any of the specious circumstances listed above.

I know there are exceptions. Animals in abusive homes should be removed. I know some people are losing their jobs and their homes in these difficult times. People die and leave pets behind. I am not talking about those tragedies here. I'm talking about the LAME EXCUSES.

Isn't it disgusting? A cat is for life, not until the novelty wears off.

When I got Floyd, the woman said her then bf was allergic.
And she was going away on holiday.

I found out off a relative a few weeks later she had had new carpet,
and Floyd had started stropping on it.
The poor cat was turfed out to the shed, only 5 months old, freezing January.

It made me sick.

I hope people will check your list first before making decision whether or not they want to get rid of their furry 'babies' ....

You don't get rid of the cat because of that I've actually given Anastasia her own carpets to strop on. What is wrong with these people?

And Acerit, I will save that list! You wrote every reason down. Excellent work!

Hope you don't mind if I print this out and post it around the shelter, and also on the local craigslist site.. Maybe it will make people think twice... Although, knowing the majority of people, I highly doubt it.

Although I agree with everything you listed I do have to point out one thing. If someone truly does not want that cat, it is in the best interests of the cat to find a loving home that will want it. I have to admit if some irresponsible animal owner didn't have a lame excuse like above, I would not have a very vital core to my family, Gizmo. I guess I just try to always see both sides. It is sad and tragic cats go from home to home I agree but I rather see a cat in a loving home than a home that doesn't see that kitty for its true life time potential. Good post, very well thought out.

I totally agree with this list, it is the same in regards to dogs as well!
When my husband and I first got Lily, waaay back before we even thought about being cats owners, we looked around for housing (apartments at that time) and SO many places would not take a larger dog, over 25lbs (what, everyone has chihuahua's?)
I refused to give up my dog for anything, so we lived in a motel for about 5 weeks until we found a place that was large dog friendly. The things we do for our pets...
