i'm new, western united states, 54, have 3 cats: diotima, female black DSH, 15 yo, baci, male lilac point 5 yo, and houdini, male lilac point, almost 2 yo.

we live in an urban area so they can't really go outside, although houdini has squeezed out the open window onto the ledge (because i have no screens on the windows and am not allowed to) which scared me because i live on the fifth floor. i try to never leave the windows open more than a couple of inches but they're weighted so you can raise them with one finger, practically. he shoved his head under it (guess he really wanted out there--he's always been an escape artist, hence the name).

Why can't you have screens?

i have a loft in a building that's over 100 years old. it's downtown and the historical preservation society decided the screens ruin the look of the building so no one can have screens. you can't do anything that defaces the look on the outside. so far i've never gotten a warning about my cats sitting in the windows though

one lady's cat did fall out once (that i've heard) but it's okay i guess. i've heard five floors and under are the worst distances for cats to fall because they get injured more easily. just what i need, a $1500 vet bill

no one else but houdini would do that. baci is scaredy cat max, he is afraid of EVERYTHING. diotima isn't afraid of anything but she's never been able to jump very high and now she's a little arthiritic so she prefers the heating pad on my bed to the window.
