Richi The Cat is on a distinguished road
Default New Kitty - Richi

Hello Everyone

We are new to the forum. 2 Days ago we got a new kitten. His name is Richi. He’s about 9 weeks old and is Half Persian and Half European House Cat. He’s a real cutie. He’s adjusted very well to his new home. Within an hour he checked out all of the rooms and found himself a few snuggly places to chill.

He spends most of his day following me and my boyfriend around the house, playing with our feet, or taking power naps all over the place. He’s curious and friendly, and super cuddly. He’s a quick learner as well. He knows where the food and water dishes are, and within a day, has found and is using his cat toilet like a pro. He’s also learned to climb onto our bed, and sleeps snuggly between our legs.

Glad to be part of this community. Check out our little Richi in the attachment.

Congratulations on your new baby!

Please don't let little Richi play with your feet. You think it's cute now but you will not think it is cute in a few weeks.

Never use hands or feet to play with your kitten. Always have some sort of toy in your hand. Start training him the right way now to avoid problems as he gets older.

Give him a stuffed animal about his own size for him to pounce and bite and bunny kick. Use wand type toys (string on a stick) for running and leaping games.

Keep a box of throw toys handy at all times to throw for him to chase down. Don't be surprised if he fetches them back to you (or to a place of his own choosing)

Feed your kitten a good quality canned diet. No dry food. Cats are strict obligate carnivores and cannot thrive on a dry diet. It is bad for them in many ways.

This website, written by a vet feline nutrition specialist is a good place to start learning about why it's important to feed your kitten a wet (or raw) diet.

hi acerIT

It is nice to hear back from someone who knows a lot about cats and be part of this active forum. Ive gotten some scratches from Richi yesterday when playing which he didn't intend to make I guess he was just playful, but I learnt quickly I have to change that.

He loves to play with stuffed mice and the toy u suggested that's his own size (small teddybear). Thanks for the tip!

It is new to me with the wet food as I was always told wet food is fattier and not as healthy and I should only feed it twice a week, however that suggestion came from other catowners and not a vet.

Im excited for our first vet visit today at two pm Ill let you know what he said

Kind regards
Kathrin

Wet food is not "fattier" and is more like the prey a cat was designed by nature to eat. Canned food is on average 78% moisture. A mouse is 70% moisture. Dry food is only 10% moisture.

A cat can not drink enough water to make up the difference. A dry diet is the cause of many conditions and illnesses in cats. urinary tract disease (can be fatal in males) obesity, diabetes, dental disease, kidney disease to name a few.

In addition a dry fed cat is chronically dehydrated. All his life.

Keep in mind at this vet visit that most vets know very little about feline nutrition and will tell you whatever bag you are feeding is "fine". The vets are wrong.

You want Richi to be better than "fine". You want him to be as healthy and feeling as well as he possibly can. This means a wet (or raw) diet.

So I have been to the vet yesterday and the vet suggested a dry food diet with wet food occasionally and also some raw meat like minced meat beef once in a while. It is sometimes confusing what to believe in but since you are all longyear catowners and know what youre talking about Im going to try with the wet food.

Since he is so little I really would hate to make rookie mistakes that can be prevented

Thanks for all those suggestions , Im loving the forum because it gives me different suggestions on my various questions
