A feral is a cat who was abandoned or what ever, (or maybe a second or third generation- or more) and has had to fend for itself for so long that it becomes wild. Ferals are essentially the same cat (biologically) as a domestic cat, but it is how they are raised. (Nurture)
My husband and I raised a litter of ferals whose mom had disappeared. They were so little they still had their umbilical stumps. These guys are, of course the tamest, most loving kitties you have ever seen. They do not know they are cats, and do not meow. Instead, they make sounds similar to human sounds, except the sounds are within the range capability of a cat's vocal cords. I am beginning to learn their language, they are good teachers.
I have one of them -Junior- (haha, 17 lbs!) sitting on my desk next to my computer as I write this. They understand and respond to commands, and I taught Junior to "Sit! Stay!" which he does rather well, for a cat. (Short attention span.)
Nurture. That is the operative word. |
