XIIId Gregorius, Decretalia The watershed between prehistory and history can be defined by the period in which writing came to be developed. Writing could be said to have marked the beginning of civilisation as such and is therefore arguably one of the most influential inventions. Huis Bergh possesses and displays a considerable number of medieval hand-written books. These books have a codex structure. At the beginning of the Christian era the codex gradually came to replace the roll. A codex consists of a number of sections that have been folded, cut and bound within a book cover. The text was primarily written on parchment which was made from the skin of goats, sheep, calves or sometimes even unborn animals. Elaborate miniatures and border illustrations embellish the texts. Around 1450 AD the art of printing was being developed, which means that all texts before that time were hand-written. Both the writing and the illustrations of the early printed works were in fact imitations of those of the hand-written books. The collection at Huis Bergh contains 73 hand-written and elaborately embellished books, the surface being paper or parchment, as well as 72 single sheets. The oldest integral hand-written text of the collection originated in Byzantium. It dates from the 11th century and was written in Greek. The books of hours form a substantial part of the Huis Bergh collection. These books contain the prayers the laymen were supposed to pray each day at set times. To mark the beginning of the different parts of text or even of a page, the initial capital letter would often be richly (historical or otherwise) decorated. These books, originating in the northern and southern Low Countries and France, give a good indication of the development of the successive modes of illustrations and schools of writing. The collection furthermore contains unique manuscripts with Gregorian music as well as a legal manuscript. Another very valuable manuscript, executed in large folio dates from 1300 AD and contains the decrees by Pope Gregory. Central on the pager is the text, written in Latin and bordered by comments or glosses. Added to this, the manuscript contains four stunning miniatures. Eight bibles from the 12-13th century, again written in latin on parchment, are in fact a collection in their own right. The smallest ones were written on vellum, a very fine sort of parchment made from calf skin.
